JOBS are at risk at Shannon IT company Avocent today. The company is a subsidiary of Vertiv, and in a statement it said, “Vertiv has notified the Minister for Employment Affairs and Social Protection that we are considering staffing changes at our Shannon site. We are keeping our employees and customers informed. This is part of our efforts to deliver our products and services to our customers in the most effective and affordable way possible.” According to its accounts, Avocent International Designated Activity Company employed 84 people in the year to September 30, 2017. PEOPLE living adjacent to the site of a proposed one million square foot data centre campus on the outskirts of Ennis have been almost completely left in the dark about the implications for them. On Wednesday, several of the people living close to the site said that while prospective developer Tom McNamara has spoken to them, they still have little information and harbour significant concerns. One woman said she is “totally in shock”, while resident Edward Casey said it has caused a degree of upset in the area. “A neighbour of ours didn’t sleep for two or three nights after hearing about it. The first time I heard it, I didn’t know what to think. I have a business, going well, but it could be turned upside down,” he said. TURAS Nua has announced they are increasing their efforts to work with more employers in Clare and are targeting an additional 160 businesses and organisations over the course of the coming year. This is on top of the 490 employers there are already working with in the county. The employment activation organisation delivers the JobPath programme on behalf of the Department of Employment Affairs and Social Protection in 13 counties across the southern half of the Republic of Ireland. They are now placing approximately 1,000 people in jobs each month. In Clare they have already helped 1,131 people find work and expect that number to increase further over the course of the coming year. Turas Nua help prepare the long term unemployed (ie those out of work for 12 months or longer) to secure and sustain employment. AROUND 40 jobs are being shed from Digital river in Shannon, as the work is being transferred to Bulgaria. Laura May, vice-president of global delivery and commerce operations with the company, this week said, “We recently made a strategic decision to transition a part of our customer service business to an existing third-party provider, which resulted in a reduction of staff in our Shannon office. Digital river’s Shannon office continues to be a vital part of our global business and remains our largest European office, with no plans to relocate the remaining operations. “We have just concluded a consultation process within our Shannon office, where employee representatives were consulted with and came to agreement on several items related to the transition, including the redundancy package. “We are currently in the process of individual consultation with the at-risk employees and are committed to providing as much support as possible.” Minister of State Pat Breen said around 60 jobs will remain in …

EDWARDS Lifesciences expect to begin filling some of the 600 jobs it is creating next month, while they have appointed a plant general manager to oversee the investment of €80 million. The California-based company recently announced it is opening the plant in the Mid-West, although it has not as yet said exactly where it will be. It has an interim facility in Shannon. Nathan Tenzer has been named as plant general manager for the new operations. He will have responsibility for leading its management and engineering function and delivering on the company’s strategic objective of expanding its global supply network of delivery components for transcatheter heart valve therapies, where open heart surgery would previously have been the norm. He has worked for Edwards for more than 15 years, while for the past two, he has held the position of senior director of engineering in an Edwards manufacturing facility near Salt Lake City. “I am excited by the opportunity to establish …

US company Edwards Lifesciences Corportation has announced plans to employ 600 people in the Mid West, with 60 to be hired this year in Shannon. A global leader in medical innovations for structural heart disease and surgical monitoring, the company has chosen the Mid West as the site for a new plant to manufacture delivery components for its transcatheter heart valve therapies. It expects to begin hiring new employees in Shannon by June, in roles such as production staff, engineering and professional management. The company plans to have completed a new purpose built manufacturing facility in the Mid West in 2020. Once operational 600 people are to be employed. “On behalf of everyone in the Mid West I would like to warmly welcome Edwards Lifesciences to the region. Their presence here serves to highlight the attractiveness of the region as a destination for progressive, innovation-driven companies,” said Minister of State Pat Breen.

More than 50,000 jobs have been created in the construction industry since the lowest point of the recession in 2013. CSO figures, released this week,indicate that industry has hired approximately 1,000 people per month in this period. It is expected that one in 16 people in the economy will be employed in construction by 2019 as the industry enters a sustained growth phase. The construction sector has an important role to play in the continued recovery of the economy, according to Minister for Business, Enterprise, and Innovation, Heather Humphreys. “I welcome the news that over 50,000 jobs have been created in the construction industry since 2013, and that it is entering a sustained growth phase. It also builds on the positive announcement from the CSO that the seasonally adjusted unemployment rate for January 2018 was 6.1%, down from 6.2% in December 2017, and a peak of 15.1% in February 2012,” she said. JAGUAR Land Rover has confirmed it will open a software engineering centre, creating 150 jobs in Shannon this year. In conjunction with Jaguar Land Rover’s engineering team in the UK, the Shannon facility will be working on electric and automated driving vehicles. It will develop new technologies to support electrification and self-driving features on future Jaguar and Land Rover vehicles. Nick Rogers, Executive Director of Product Engineering for Jaguar Land Rover said: “Technical innovation lies at the heart of Jaguar Land Rover and our innovation is continuous.
