A fireman looks on as a gorse fire rages near The Hand on the Connolly to Miltown road on Wednesday evening. A number of units of the Clare County Fire Service were called to deal with the fire, which was burning on both sides of the road, about one kilometre on the Connolly side of The Hand. The surface of the bog had dried out considerably and a strong wind whipped up the flames. As the fire got out of control, there were fears it could spread to nearby forestry.
