The objective was to gain the insight of children’s interpretation of family caring. At this week’s launch of an exhibition of the works, Pat Shannon head of services Caring for Carers Ireland congratulated the winner Noel O’Gorman from Cahermurphy National School Kilmihill. “Noel’s entry was outstanding and is well worth viewing at the de Valera Library,” said Mr Shannon.

Newly elected Mayor of Clare Joe Arkins speaking at the launch commented, “This project celebrates the important and often undervalued role played by Carers in communities throughout Ireland.”

“One constant during this period of great economic and social change has undoubtedly been the necessity for families and communities to care and look out for each other. Mar a deir an seanfhocal: Ar scáth a chéile a mhaireann na daoine. We all depend on each other. During the years of the Celtic Tiger, we had begun to think that we could survive without each other and that money could solve all problems. But we now realise that our greatest wealth is each other.

“It is clear to me that through their artwork and creative writing, the children who participated in the project have not only demonstrated their creative skills but have also developed a greater awareness of those who provide care to others.”

Speaking about the Noel’s winning entry, Councillor Arkins said, “I was absolutely blown away by the standard of the winning entry and the extent to which it has encapsulated the whole theme of caring. Obviously, this young man has a great insight into caring, which stems from his experience of caring for his Nan.

“Today is indeed a proud moment for Noel, his family, teacher and school. Noel has brought an all Ireland title to County Clare. His classmates must be proud to have such a VIP in their midst.” He used his mayoral powers to cancel homework for the schoolchildren. Councillor Arkins also commended Caring for Carers  for the “tireless work” they do in promoting the work carried out by carers throughout Ireland.
