Youghal too strong for Ennis

ENNIS produced a disappointing performance when they entertained Youghal in the Challenge Cup Shield competition at the Showgrounds on Saturday.

Their only score in the opening half was a try from centre John Moore. It came after good work by the pack, which created the opportunity for the backs to run at the visitors. Moore brushed aside two tackles to score in the corner midway through the first period.

Five minutes later, the home side were penalised for being offside and Youghal converted the resultant penalty.

Ennis attacked again in the remaining time but failed to add to Moore’s try and when the half-time whistle sounded, the score stood at 5-3.

Ten minutes into the second half, Youghal hit the front when they struck for a try, which was converted. They extended their lead two minutes later when they landed another penalty.

Ennis responded with a Davy Murphy penalty but Youghal quickly cancelled out this score when they landed another penalty. The home side was guilty of conceding yet another penalty soon after this and the visitors found the target to increase their lead.

Hopes of an Ennis rally were further weakened when substitute Roy Duggan was yellow carded in the 68th minute.

Youghal also had a man sin binned but it was too late for Ennis to capitalise. Throughout the game, the home side struggled to break down the Youghal defence and this proved costly on the day.
