Woodstock will represent Clare in this year’s JB Carr seniors competition after they defeated a fancied Ennis side in the county final at Ennis last Thursday.
Bobby Burke birdied the 18th to seal Woodstock’s win and they are now awaiting the Cork winners in their next outing. Burke’s putt gave Woodstock a 3-2 win in a match that attracted a big attendance.
The clubs were level, with the last of the five pairings coming down the par five 18th. Both teams were just off the green in three. With Woodstock to play first, Bobby Burke stepped up and his putt was successful for a birdie. Michael Carmody came agonisingly close to slotting his putt, which would have seen the match go up the 19th.
The results in detail are (Woodstock pairings first): Donal Kenny and Bobby Burke beat Tom Fox and Michael Carmody on the 18th; Liam McInerney and Michael O’Brien beat Matt Flynn and Pat Murphy; Denis Maurer and Rory Kennedy lost to Tom Saunders and Johnnie Cullinan; PJ O’Neill and James Meade lost to Paul Higgins and Sean O’Gorman; Ollie McNamara and Tom Malone beat Eamon Kelly and Tony Coote.
Woodstock
In the club singles at Woodstock last week, the winner was Shane O’Sullivan (16) with 43 points from Nicky Ryan (6) with 41 points, with third spot filled by Brendan O’Reilly with 40 points.
In the weekly seniors competition, the format was a team-of-two modified fourball over 15 holes and the winners were Tom Malone and Sean McDermott with 40 points.
In the ladies’ 18-hole Stableford competition, Margaret Flanagan was the winner. In the previous week’s 18-hole Stableford competition, Ramona Gleeson was the winner with 35 points from Mary Gleeson (25), with a similar score.
The club’s two ladies’ teams had mixed luck last week. The minor team of Áine Donegan, Una Patton, Teresa Sherlock, Nancy Burke and Maura Umlawski beat Kilkee by three and two on Saturday in Kilrush.
On Sunday in Lahinch, the Challenge Cup team of Kathleen McEnery, Anne Coote, Ramona Gleeson, Margaret Flanagan and Patricia Leyden were beaten 3/2 by Kilrush.
In the spring league final, the team of Richard Pyne (8), Brian Mulcahy (14), Donal Brogan (16) and Jack Duffy (25) were winners over Noel Kenny, Noel Mulcahy (11), Noel Kelleher (18) and Brendan Arthur (19).
The winner of the open singles last Wednesday was Paul Sherlock (14) with 39 points.
In the April medal competition, the winner was George Smith 68, from Michael Hayes 68 and Richard Pyne, 69. The gross was won by Tony Nugent (4) with 77.
There will be an open fourball this May Bank Holiday Weekend and an open three-person scramble on Monday.
Lahinch
John Whelan (9) from Dublin City was the winner of the open singles at Lahinch last Thursday with 34 points.
In the men’s singles on the Castle Course on Saturday, the winner was Eoin Glynn (6) with 43 points from Eamon Foley (19) with 41 and John Madden (19) with a similar score.
The Lahinch Ladies’ Scratch cup, a 36-hole stroke competition, was played for on Saturday when the winner was Sinéad Sexton with 147 from Lucy Simpson on 148, Deirdre Smith on 152 and Patrice Delaney on 152.
In the nett section, Lisa O’Shea was the winner with 146 from Gemma McCarthy on 148 and Caitriona Griffin on 148. Other prize winners were: first 18 gross, Mary Doyle, 79; second 18 gross, Rachel Taylor, 80; first 18 nett, Valerie Shannon 73; second 18 nett, Valerie Hassett, 72; O-50s, Mary Dowling, 177; U-18s; Shannon Burke, 170.
In the men’s singles on Sunday, the winner was Domhnaill O’Mahony (7) with 40 points from Paul O’Brien (6) with 35 and Jim Young Junior (5) with 33 points. The gross was won by Niall Shaw with 29 points.
Ennis
Ennis Seniors held a modified fourball last week when the winners, with 38 points, were Michael Dempsey and Frank Sheedy from Kevin O’Connor and Luke Coote with 37. They were followed by Terry Hughes and Michael Culliney with 37 followed by Pat Cusack and Tom Pilkington with 36; Noel Pyne and Johnny Guerin with 36; Dick Herbert and Seamus Hanrahan with 35; Richard O’Connell and Michael Torpey; PJ Garry and Willie Moloney; with ninth spot filled by Tom McGrath and Frank Landy.
In the ladies’ monthly medal, the winner in the silver section was Yvonne Keohane with 71 from Bridget Hoey on 72 and Kitty Morris on 74. In the bronze section, Rita O’Brien was the winner with 74.
The senior ladies’ winners last week were Mary Gardiner and Carmel Cummins with 42 points. In the Friday open, the winner was Mary O’Halloran with 34 points from Peggy Costello with 33.
In the Friday open singles at Ennis, the winner was Leroy Crowe, Slievenamon, with 39 points from Leo Herbert on 37, Gerard Hannon on 36 and Raphael Keogh on 36. Kieran Cunnane from Woodstock won the gross with 36 while the winner in the ladies’ section was Mary O’Halloran with 34 points.
St Flannan’s PPU
In the St Flannan’s College past pupils union outing at Ennis on Saturday, the winner was Brian O’Gorman with 39 points from Pat McInerney with a similar score, Jason Woods with 38, Adrian Glynn with 38 and Conor Murphy with 37. Paul Enright won the gross with 32 while the staff prize was won by Peter Quinn with 37. Gerard O’Brien won the prize for the parent of a pupil.
In the Ennis members’ category, the winner was Michael Murphy with 44 points from Flan Glynn on 39 and Seamus Bowe on 39.
Dromoland
The winner of the April monthly medal and the second golfer-of-the-year competition at Dromoland last weekend was Leonard Shanahan with 71 from Aidan O’Connor on 72 and Damian Ryan on 72.
The gross was won by Tony Cleary with 79 while the 18 and over handicap section winner was Tim Crowe with 84. Dale Foley won the junior section with 79.
The winners of the mixed scramble last week were Peter Ronan, Katrina O’Neill and Geoffrey Ronan from PJ Phelan, Bobby Deegan and Ian Mulready, with third spot filled by Gus Considine, Frank Conway and Jimmy McManus.
This week’s winners of the mixed scramble were Joan Ryan, Bobby Deegan and Ed Crowe from Con Woods and Frank Travers, with third spot filled by Dermot O’Hanlon, Con Ryan and Mary Arthur.
The men’s competition is 18 holes singles Stableford and will take place over the bank holiday weekend.
The winner of the ladies’ weekly Stableford competition was Tina Maguire with 38 points from Linda Kochhar with a similar score and third spot filled by Majella Cotgreave with 36.
In league matches at Kilrush on Saturday, Dromoland intermediate team were winners over Shannon while the minor team lost to Lahinch and the challenge team lost to Ennis.
Shannon
Fifty-two teams participated in the Dr William Flynn Memorial Pro-Am at Shannon on Friday, which saw 28-year-old Bernard Quigley from Carton House return a fantastic three-under par in extremely windy conditions to win the event. Bernard led the field by three shots from David Higgins, Waterville and Damian Mooney, Ballyliffin, who both shot level par. Local assistant professional, Shane O’Sullivan, was in fourth place with +1.
The team event was won by James Quinlivan (professional), Colm Reidy and Pat Madden, both members of Shannon, and Jim O’Connell from Kilrush, who were a full six points clear of the rest of the field with 95. In second place were Kieran Considine, Pa and Sean Carey with 89 points.
Last week’s open singles was won by Gregory O’Connor (15) with 42 points from K Maloney (17) with a similar score and Chris Maguire (6) with 41 points. Daniel Brennan (2) won the gross.
In Saturday’s singles, Louise Halpin Junior (4) was the winner with 38 points from Ian Fox (8) with a similar score and Fergus Murphy (15) with 39 points. Daniel Brennan (2) won the gross with 34 points.
Kilkee
In the spring league final at Kilkee, Mike Mullane lost to David O’Flynn (one down), Kevin O’Connor beat George Roche (one up), Michael Miniter beat Pat Powell (two up), Jim Leyden beat Michael Hoare (2/1), Andrew O’ Flynn beat Declan McDonnell (one up) while the match between Joan Eakins and Deirdre Powell finished all square.
East Clare
In the men’s 18-hole stroke competition at East Clare, the winner was Teddy Murphy (16) with 68 nett from Mike Whelan (4) with 69 nett and Eoin McGuinness (1) with 70 nett.
In the yellow tees competition, the winner was Jackie McHugh (24) with 43 points.
In the men’s seniors competition the winners were Kieran Sheedy, Steve Symes and Danny Minogue from Martin Kelly, Conor Tuohy and Gerry O’Brien, with third spot filled by Jim Greene, Willie Roche and Pat Browne.
In the ladies’ 18-hole Stableford competition, the winner was Sue Casey from Helen Ahern and Mary Rogers.
In the senior ladies’ competition, the winner was Sue Casey from Joan Kinsella, with third spot filled by Frances Gaffney.
The Friday scramble was won by John Fahy, Helen Downey and Margaret Lynch from Jim Greene, Brendan Moloney, Margaret MacNamara and Marie A Kelly, with third spot filled by Dave Condren, Mary Rogers and Noreen Doyle.
This weekend, the men’s club have their fourball matchplay qualifier while there will be an open team-of-three competition (any combination) on May Bank Holiday Monday.
Kilrush
In the men’s seniors outing at Kilrush last week, the winners were Seamus O’Doherty, Tom McGrath and Bill Murphy from John Robinson, Billy Clarke and Paddy Carmody, with third spot filled by Tom Prendeville, Brendan McNamara and Murt Collins.
In last week’s ladies’ singles, Mary O’Sullivan won from Dolores Reidy with Annie Gallagher in third spot. The category winners were Ailish Lorigan, Miriam Saunders and Margaret Clune.
The Leadmore Trophy was played for at the weekend when the winner was club vice-captain Finbarr McMahon with 42 points. He had two to spare over John Robinson, with Jimmy McSwiggan a point further back in third spot.
Entries are now being accepted for the Glynn Cup, a men’s fourball matchplay competition. The competition this Saturday will be the Shannon Ferries team of three, with a men’s singles on Sunday and a mixed scramble on Monday. The ladies singles continues on Thursday.
Portumna
In the men’s 18-hole singles Stableford competition at Portumna at the weekend, the winner was Philip Harte (14) with 40 points from Tony Harte (17) with 38 points and Adrian Whyte (16), also with 38 points.
The gross was won by JP McLaughlin (Scr) with 32 points while the seniors winner was Liam Horan (20) with 36 points.
The ladies’ 18-hole foursomes competition for the Australian Spoons continues until this Friday, with all proceeds to the ladies’ ILGU.
On Tuesday, May 14 the ladies host an 18-hole open singles Stableford competition.

The winners of the men’s 18-hole fourball at Gort at the weekend were Ray Beatty (12) and John Sinnott (21) with 44 points from Martin Flaherty (14) and Con O’Donoghue (19) with 43 and Eanna Melville (8) and Colm Beakey (12), also with 43.
In the Friday open singles Stableford, the winner was Sean Cahill (16) with 43 points from John Rodgers (7) in second place on 39.
The club’s Am-Am will take place this Thursday, Friday and Saturday while there will be an 18-hole singles on both Sunday and Monday.
In the ladies’ competition for the Bob Forde Trophy, the winner was Maura Hanrahan (12) with 38 points from Patricia Reddy (17) with a similar score, with third spot filled by Ann Marie Moran (33) also with 38 points.
The Australian Spoons Foursomes will be the competition this weekend, with an open singles on Monday.
Spanish Point
The winner of the men’s seniors open last Tuesday was Patrick O’Boyle with 41 points. The winner of the weekend 18-hole foursomes was Eoghan O’Loughlin and Brendan Sexton with 41 points. This weekend is another instalment in the golfer of the year, when the format will be 18-hole singles.
The Towns Cup team were in action last Saturday in Doneraile, Cork. Led by their captains Martin Glenny and Noel Connellan, they came away with a memorable victory over Lismore. The Gathering event on the June Bank Holiday Weekend is gaining in popularity and all past and present members are invited to enjoy the festivities by ringing the clubhouse on 065 7084198.
Cranny-Coolmeen
Woodstock was the venue for a Cranny-Coolmeen Society outing last week, when the winners were Gerry Bredin, Michael McMahon and John Kennelly with 98 points from Ray Shannon, Brendan McNamara and Agnes Shannon with 96 points. In third spot were Ciarán Browne, Patrick and Gerry Meaney with 96 points.
Friends of Clare GAA
The Friends & Supporters of Clare GAA will stage its 23rd annual golf classic fundraising event at Newlands Golf Club, Dublin, on Thursday May 16. This signals a great ‘Clare gathering’ day and one that has always proved to be a most enjoyable outing. Up to 40 teams of any combination of four golfers will be accommodated.
The funds generated are used by Clare GAA for the development of underage football and hurling. “Over the years, we have given financial support to Clare clubs as they reach All-Ireland stages, as well as to the Clare camogie and ladies’ football teams. To date, our contribution has amounted to nearly €500,000,” explained committee chairperson Christy Killeen. The captain is Kilmihil man Michael Anglim.

Diarmuid Murphy was the winner of the Haven Arms Society outing to Shannon last Saturday, with a score of 37 points from Jerry Leahy on 35 and Michael Miniter, also with 35. Ann Brennan won the ladies’ prize with 30 points.

Clare hurlers
THE Clare Hurling Supporters’ Club will host the annual Clare Hurlers classic this Friday and Saturday at Shannon, with all precedes going to the senior hurlers training fund.
The supporters’ club are expecting over 65 teams over the two days but there are still a couple of slots available and the timesheet is available at Shannon Golf Club by ringing Mike Corry on 086 2444764.
Teams will be playing for some top prizes as well as the chance to lift the Ger Hoey Memorial Trophy, the cup awarded to the top team, named in honour of the late Doora-Barefield and Clare stalwart.
