THE area finals of the Jimmy Bruen team competition (handicaps five to 11) will take place this weekend at Woodstock.
There are two preliminary games down for decision this Thursday evening with Ennis taking on Lahinch and Doonbeg facing East Clare. The winners will join the remaining Clare clubs in the first round proper on Saturday and Sunday with the eventual winners of this phase going into the North Munster finals next week.
Lahinch
BIG crowds were the order of the day at Lahinch at the weekend as the president’s (Tony Garry) prize and the captain’s (Eugene Gilligan) prize to the ladies were played for.
Mark Kelly (20) won the president’s prize with an impressive 42 points. He had one to spare over Seán Scanlan (12) with Alan Donegan (11) in third spot with a similar score. David Foley (13) was fourth followed by Pat Falvey (17) and both returned 40 points to finish fourth and fifth respectively.
Other prize winners were: best gross Friday: Michael O’Kelly on 36 points; best gross Saturday: Kieran Maher on 36 points; first seniors: Niall McMahon (16) on 36 points; second seniors: JC O’Dowd (16) on 36 points; junior prize: Richard Leonard (8) on 40 points; past president: Jerry O’Donnell (17) on 33 points.
Friday: 1. Ger McMahon (9) on 39 points; 2: Michael O’Grady (14) on 39 points; 3: Tony Molloy (11) on 39 points; 4: Jimmy Condon (12) on 38 points.
Saturday: 1. Kevin Molony (17) on 39 points; 2. John Gleeson (8) on 39 points; 3. Jonathan Fennelly (15) on 38 points; 4. Greg Young (5) on 37 points.
Mary O’Meara (12) won captain Eugene Gilligan’s prize to the ladies on Sunday with 39 points. She had one to spare from Stephanie McGrath (12) on 38 and Ita Slattery (22) who had a similar score. Eileen Rose Power won the gross with 35 points
In the silver division, Jenny Cagney (14) was the winner with 37 points from Gráinne Dalton (6) on 37 and Mona Davis (20) on 36.
Liz O’Driscoll (24) won the bronze division with 36 points from Carmel Burke (25) with 36 points and Maire Hanrahan (26) with 33 points.
Anne Vaughan (14) won the front nine with 22 points while Teresa O’Brien (30) won the back nine with 21 points.
Last Thursday’s open singles was won by Declan Ring (13) with 32 points from John Daly (17) with a similar score. In third spot was John Kennedy (8) and he also had 32 points.
Chloe Duggan (18) was the winner in the ladies’ section with 36 points. In the O’Mara cup, a ladies’ singles v par competition on Saturday, Lourdes Gleeson (22) was the winner with five-up from Chloe Duggan (18) on one-up, Valerie Shannon (9), Miriam Abernethy (3), Anna Glynn (15) and Frances Hough (23) who were on level. Sinéad Sexton (6) won the gross.
The men’s fourball on the Castle course on Sunday was won by Terry McCarthy (15) and Martin Ryan (10) with 46 points from Michael McGrath (15) and Kevin Power (7) on 45. In third spot on 45 points were Ger Breen (14) and Eamon Foley (22).
Anne Vaughan won the ladies’ challenge cup from Barbara Foley with Connie Fahy and Val Shannon the beaten semi-finalists.
Valerie Hassett (6) won the O’Hanrahan Trophy with 37 points.
The ladies’ Stableford competition on Monday on the Castle course was won by Chloe Duggan with 39 points.
In the Phelps Vase men’s singles stroke competition, Ronan Cooney (3) was the winner with 71 nett from Paul O’Brien (5) on 73 and Murt McMahon (8) on 77.
Ennis
THREE hundred and 16 members played for the captain’s (Pádraig Ryan) prize at Ennis on Saturday and Sunday.
The winner with 92 nett was Ian Myatt who had four shots to spare from Pádraig McNicholas with Noel Ryan in third spot on 101.5 followed by Brendan Considine on 102, David Hoey on 103, Peter Lyons on 102, John McEntee on 103, Mark Roche on 103.5, Colm Daly on 103.5 and Eddie Glenny on 104.
David O’Connor won the gross with 75 from Kieran Fox on 76. The category winners were Pat Murphy with 70 nett, Damien Gilligan with 66 nett and Peadar Cosgrove with 66 nett. George Dilger won the leading qualifier award with 66 nett. John Finn with 105 won the past captain’s award, Tony Kehoe with 109 won the senior’s prize and Jimmie Kelly with 69 nett won the guest’s prize. Gerard Hartnett recorded a hole-in-one.
In the captain’s fourball, the winners, with 49 points, were Ger Hanrahan and Charlie McEnery.
The Cahercalla Cup will be the competition on this Sunday while the monthly medal will be played for on Saturday. The open singles will continue on Friday with the mixed foursomes on Thursday.
In the ladies’ section, Maura McNicholas won the silver May medal with 68 from Pamela Murphy on 72. The bronze section was won by Bernie Browne with 72 from Pat Leacy on 74.
In the ladies’ seniors’ section, the winners of the team event were Ann Daly, Kathleen Frehill and Mary Leahy with 50 from Susan O’Brien, Joan Murphy and Kate O’Ceallaigh who had a similar score. In third spot with 53 were Ann Casey, Gertrude Finn and Eileen Daly.
Doonbeg
PAKIE O’Dea won the Doonbeg society captain’s (Declan Conway) prize on Sunday from Paddy O’Grady with Nigel Dillon in third spot followed by Gerry Ryan. John Maguire and Nathan Capon won the nines while Timmy Killeen won the gross. Seamus Lynch won the guests’ section with the past captain’s award going to Francis McInerney. Other prize winners were Nigel Dillon (nearest the pin) and Shane Igoe (long drive).
The summer league has commenced and details can be had from Kevin Hayes (competition secretary).
Shannon
IN the ladies’, PGA Tankard new member Maura Mulcahy achieved her first victory on Shannon soil with 38 points. Maura had one point to spare from ladies’ secretary Mary Sheehan on 37 points. The gross was won by Naoimh McMahon with 27 points while the back nine was needed to separate Sheila Forde and Lyn Darcy who finished fourth and 05 respectively with 35 points.
In the men’s Wednesday open singles, Paul McElligott captured the honours with 42 points. Despite no score at the first, Paul returned 21 points for his opening nine with birdies at the second and eighth being the highlight. He also returned 21 points for his inward journey recording a further birdie at the 10th. He had one point to spare from junior member Jamie O Shea who was around in level par. Jamie covered the opening nine in two under with birdies coming at the first and third. He then dropped four shots over the next three holes but steadied the ship to cover his last six holes in two under par with birdies at 13 and 18. The in-form Gerard Flanagan was third with 40 points. Paul O’Neill captured gross with two under par 38 points. Paul was four under after 13 having recorded birdies at the fourth, sixth, eighth and 11th but an untidy finish left him content with the gross.
Over the bank holiday weekend, on Friday and Saturday, the club ran a men’s open fourball where local players were much to the fore. The winners with 49 points were Tony Aherne and Billy Grimes .They had two points to spare from a trio of Seamus Doyle and Louis Upton, Jim Fitzgerald and Gerry O’Reilly Jamie O’Shea and PJ Moroney who finished second, third and fourth respectively.
The lady captain’s (Marie Hogan) prize will be played for this Saturday while the intermediate scratch cup will be the competition on Sunday.
Spanish Point
SINCE its introduction, the Friday evening nine-hole scramble has proven very popular at Spanish Point and is adding a social outing to the club’s activities. The winners on Friday last with a great score of six under nett were Tom Mernagh (5), Ray Ward (17) and Gerard O’Loughlin (18).
Last Tuesday’s seniors’ open winner was Willie McNamara (17) with 42 points. In the Thursday open, Eamonn McMahon (20) was the winner with 37 points.
In the Finnerty Memorial last weekend, Eoghan O’Loughlin was the winner with 64 nett from Martin Glenny, Harry Crowe and Niall McMahon, all with 66 nett.
In the previous week’s competition, Seán McMahon was the winner with 39 points from Tom Mernagh on a similar score with Donal Burke in third spot on 37 points.
Kilkee
IN the weekend fourball at Kilkee, the winners were Pat Haugh (7) and Noel Roche (13) with 48 points from Tom Carr (18) and Pat Sheehan (16) who had a similar score. In third spot with 48 points were Michael Ryan (11) and Neil Higgins (16).
In the seniors’ competition, Jim Lowe (26) was the winner with 30 points from Pat Carey (13) on 27 points and Gerry O’Halloran (15) with 26 points.
In the ladies’ members’ cup, Margaret Collins Smyth was the winner with 42 points from Kathleen Kelly on 39 points and Geraldine Ryan on 39 points. Mary O’Mahony won the gross with 39 points.
Woodstock
THERE was a big turnout for the lady captain’s (Jenny McElhinney) prize at Woodstock on Sunday when the winner was Bernie Power 36 points followed by Una Patton with 35 points, Ann Gillan on 32 points, Fran Feighery on 32 points and Áine Burke on 32 points. Mary Sadlier with 22 points won the gross while Kathleen McEnery was the category winner with 31 points. The nines were won by Anne Marie Russell with 16 points and Teresa Sherlock with 17 points. Other prize winners included: longest drive ninth hole (handicap 0-26): Ann Gillan; longest drive second hole (handicap 27-36): Una Patton; nearest the pin, 11th hole: Áine Burke; past lady captain: Patricia Graham 31 points and guests’ section, Betty O’Reilly on 21 points.
In the men’s competition, Colm Cooney (18) was the winner with 60 nett from John O’Connor (11) 66 nett with Jim McMahon (12) in third spot with 67 nett. Kieran Cunnane won the gross with 66 while the category winners were Donal Buckley (7) 68 nett: Niall Reynolds (13) 68 nett and
Dermot O’Neill (19) 68 nett). In the seniors’ section, John McGrath was the winner with 69 nett while Stephen Casey won the juniors with 48 points. Denis O’Brien won the guests’ section and Brian McElhinney had a hole-in-one at the fourth.
Kilrush
MARY O’Sullivan (23) was the winner of last Thursday’s ladies’ competition at Kilrush with 63 nett. She won by four strokes from Geraldine Burke (25). Kathleen O’Brien (26) was third with 68 followed by Annie Gallagher (25) with 69. Anne Brennan (10) won the gross while the nines were won by Muriel Kiely (30) with 32 nett and Freda Moran (34) with 32.
In the club classic, the winners were Mary Bolton, Peggy Mulqueen, Kieran Lillis and Tom Clarke with 99 points from Noel McMahon, Nigel Davies, Noel Kilkenny and Paraic Cotter with 97 points. In third spot with 97 points were Tom Prenderville, Tomás Prenderville, David Keane and Joe Kelly and they were followed by Peter W Glynn, Peter G Glynn, Michael Lane and Michael Lane junior on 97 points.
The June open week begins this Friday with a singles competition.
Portumna
THE June bank holiday fourball at Portumna was won by Mike Keyes (8) and Alan Madden (17) with 46 points from Seán Hogan (15) and Tony Cummins (16) with 45 points. In third spot were Eamonn Hodgins and Des Madden with 45points followed by Pat Mulvihill (11) and Brian Hayes (14) 45 points. The gross was won by Ger Lynch (5) and John Harte (5) 37 points.
Matt Donohue (8), Leslie O’Meara (10) and Brian Grogan (20) won the final of the winter open threeball with a score of 55 points from Ronan Nevin (16), Alan Hayes (15), Eddie Moloney (18) 52 points. In third spot were Evan Talty (11) (Portlaoise), Michael Talty (18) (Woodstock), Eric Murrihy (18) (Portlaoise) with 52 points followed by Gerry Madden (12), Mary Madden (21), Mary McElroy (28) with 52 points.
The ladies’ open fourball betterball was won by Suzanne Corcoran (4) and Ann Cassidy (6). Second came Marese Cooney and Kathleen Lynch with 38 points and third were Marian Frawley and Ann A Carty with 37 points.
The draw for Judith Barry’s president’s prize will take place on Sunday for the competition which will be held over the weekend of June 19 and 20.
On Sunday, the club will host the husband and wife competition.
Open week will commence from Saturday June 26 and will run to Sunday, July 4.
East Clare
THE bank holiday team-of-three competition at East Clare was won by Kieran Clancy, Fergal Kennedy and Frank Lee with 87 points from Vinny Henchy, Mary Hogan and Breege Scanlon on 85 points.
In the ladies’ section, the winners were Leslie O’Flynn, Mairéad Twomey and Ann McInerney with 95 points.
In the men’s open singles, Michael O’Brien was the winner with 42 points from Maurice Costelloe on a similar score with William O’Brien in third spot with 41 points.
There will be a men’s singles competition this weekend while the ladies will have a foursome competition.
Gort
OPEN week commences this Sunday at Gort and there will be a series of competitions throughout the week.
Last week’s ladies’ competition in aid of breast cancer was won by Christina Daly with 43 points from Sue Madden on 37 and Regina Malone on 35. Judith McGann won the gross with 28 points.
Ennis seniors
ENNIS seniors hosted a threeball modified scramble last week when the winners were Tim McAllister, Peter Farrelly and Tom Pender with 89 points. They had one to spare over Noel Pilkington, Pat Deegan and Don Ryan while third spot was filled by Seán Connolly, Cyril Kelly and Peadar Cosgrove with 85. In fourth spot were Vincent Gardiner, Tony Blake and Johnny Cullinan with 84 followed by Seán Fitzpatrick, Tom Fox and Seán Finnerty with 84. John White, Seán O’Gorman and Larry Parkes were next with 82.
Clarecastle
THE society’s next outing is to the Lahinch where the president’s prize (Ger Shanahan) will be played for on the championship course on Saturday. The tee is reserved from 2pm to 3pm and those wishing to play should text 086 3246015
Clooney-Quin
CLOONEY-Quin GAA Club will hold a fundraising golf classic on Friday and Saturday at East Clare.
The event this year will feature a trophy donated by John Conheady and his family in memory of Suzanne Conheady who was the main driving force behind past Clooney-Quin GAA club classics along with being a popular member of East Clare Golf Club.
The trophy will be presented to the winning team at the prize-giving which will be held in Malachy’s Bar, Quin, on Saturday night. There are prizes for the top six teams, including a ladies’ team prize, with Nearest the Pin and longest drive. Prizes are also on offer.
