Winter league nearing conclusion at Dromoland

LADY captain Maria Nolan and captain John O’Halloran had their drive-in on Sunday at Dromoland Castle. Their popularity was reflected in the attendance at the captains’ scramble prior to the drive-in and at the social occasion that followed.
After week six of the men’s winter league, team 14, which includes Paul O’Brien, Gerry McInerney, Michael Flannery, Diarmaid McMahon and Gerry Malone lead the way. In second place are Jimmy McManus, Aidan McMahon, Dermot O’Neill, Frank O’Grady and Sean Conway with third spot filled by Ian Mulready, Calthal Kilmartin, Hugh O’Neill, Richard Flynn and Brian Kelly.
The individual week six winner was Hugh O’Neill.
Week seven of the league takes place this week, which is the final week and the format is 18-hole singles Stableford competition.
Team eight comprising Sandy Smyth, Mary O’Donnell, Maeve McMahon, Annette Ryan, Ursula McManus and Anne O’Toole lead the ladies’ winter league.
They are just ahead of Mary Arthur, Sheila Kent, Carola Wixted, Anne Murphy, Sheila Ryan and Dervla O’Neill.
Mary Galvin won the senior ladies’ competition last week with Ber McDermott in second place.

Spanish Point
THE winner of the Tuesday seniors’ open at Spanish Point was John O’Brien with a score of 35 points followed in second place by Tony Crowley on 34 points.
The winner of the weekend singles was Brendan Sexton with 38 points.
This weekend sees the annual open men’s club fundraiser, which is a team of three or four-man scramble.

Ennis
ENNIS seniors held a modified fourball competition last week when the winners, on 43 points, were Pat McInerney and Brian Warner. They had a point to spare over Tony Kehoe and Dick Herbert with third spot filled by Sean Ryan and John Guilfoyle on 42. They were followed by Charlie McEnery and Richard O’Connell with 42,  Ferdie O’Donoghue and Pat Rutherford on 41, Michael Vaughan and Mairtin Concannon on 41, John Keane and Val Bredin on 41, Michael Kenny and Tom Fox on 40.
In the men’s weekend 14-hole club competition, the winners were Noel Ryan and Michael Kearney with 39 points from Tony Kehoe and Andrew Cregan with 38 points. In third place were Enda Heaney and Noel O’Connor with 37 points followed by Ger O’Halloran and Frank Landy                                            with fifth place filled by John F Keane and Tom Woulfe who were also on 37 points.

Woodstock
IN the club singles at Woodstock at the weekend, Paddy O’Malley (17) was he winner with 43 points while Kieran Cunnane won the gross with 32 points.
Round 2 of the spring league, scheduled for Sunday last, was cancelled due to frost. This week’s format in the league will be modified scramble while there will be a club singles at the weekend.

Lahinch
RONAN Murphy (6) was the winner of the men’s singles Stableford at the Castle Course in Lahinch on Saturday with 42 points. He had one to spare over Frank Considine (11).

Kilrush
THE winners of last week’s ladies’ seniors outing at Kilrush were Marion Brennan, Maeve Murphy and Tessie Garry with 46 points followed by Mary Collins, Margaret Griffin and Bernadette Eastham with 44 points, while third spot was filled by Anne Coen, Clare Pyne and Agnes Shannon with 41 points.
In the men’s seniors outing, the winners were Billy Clarke, Tom O’Dea  and Sean Moran with 59 points from Paddy Carmody, Denis F Nagle and Noel Cooney who had a similar score. In third spot with 56 points were P J Maher, Maurice Roche and John Stapleton.
Week four of the spring league continues until this Saturday. The leading team after week three is Tony McMahon’s Team with 245 points. They led by two from Jimmy McSwiggan’s team with Finbar McMahon’s team a further two points back in third spot followed by Tom Prendeville’s team, who are just one point further back.

Mid-West Alliance
THE Mid-West Alliance continued last week at Dromoland Castle when the gross was won by Tim Rice, PGA with 71 from  Daniel Brennan (2) on 72 and Pat Murray (+3) also with 72.
Tom Saunders (6) (Ennis) won the nett with 70 from Brian Burnell, Abbeyleix (9) with 70 and David Casey, Dromoland (9) with 71.
The nearest-the-pin prizes were won by Pat Lucey (seventh), Kieran Cunnane (13th) and Nicky Duggan (17th).
Tim Rice had the most birdies with five.

Gort
IN the men’s 18-hole Stableford at Gort last week, the winner was Patrick Ryan (14) with 45 points from Joe Geoghegan (8) with 41 points.
The winner of the Monday open was Brian Murtagh (8) with 44 points.
There will be an 18-hole singles this weekend and the weekly open will continue on Monday
The ladies’ spring league will continue until March 19 with the final set for Sunday, March 24.

East Clare
THE winners of the men’s two-ball scramble at East Clare were Peter O’Flanagan (13) and Kevin O’Flanagan (14).
In the weekly men’s seniors outing, the winners were John Brett, John Stack and Conor Tuohy from Nick Ryan, Pat Clancy and Sean Bolton with third spot filled by Pat McNamara, Pat Browne and Tony Kelly.
A similar competition for ladies was won by Noreen Doyle and Deirdre Cooney from Sue Casey and Pauline Nugent.
In the ladies’ seniors competition, the winners were Ina Reddan, Louise Delaney and Trish Kerr from Celia Moloney, Daphne Henderson and Pat Williams.
There will be a singles Stableford competition for men this weekend.
In the winter league, with two rounds completed, there is a tie at the top with Leo Mannion’s team and Mike Whelan’s team both on 42 points. Next in line is Steven Moloney’s team, closely followed by Barry Hurley’s team. Rounds 3 and 4 are now under way with both nine-hole and 14-hole singles being the format.

Haven Arms Society
THE members of the Haven Arms Society, Kilrush, will have their first outing of 2013 on this Saturday. The Castle Course in Lahinch will be the venue and the tee will be available at 11.30am.

Cooraclare-Cree
THE Cooraclare-Cree Society will hold an outing to Dromoland this Sunday. Further details can be obtained from Michael Studdert or Ross Townsend.

Pitch and putt
KEVIN Woods was the winner of the strokeplay competition at the Clare Road on Sunday last from PJ Considine with Paddy Sheedy the winner in the gross category.
The Mickey Kerin Shield will be played for this Sunday with the tee available at 10am.
