Winning start for college hurlers

Rice College Ennis and St Joseph’s Tulla made winning starts to their Munster Colleges Senior B Hurling Championship campaigns when they overcame Youghal CBS and Mallow respectively on Wednesday. Both will be in action again next week.

Rice College played with the breeze in the first half of this tie at Bansha on Wednesday. Helped by a Colm Fitzgerald goal, they led 1-9 to 0-5 at the interval with points coming from Michael O’Malley, Ritchie Hennessy, Eanna Barry and Liam Lynch.

In the opening five minutes of the second half the Cork side hit back and drew to within a point of Rice College, who then had an important point from Hennessy.

Midway through the half Youghal levelled but the Ennis side then got through for a somewhat fortunate goal when Evan McNamara finished after the Youghal goalie lost possession. While they were under a lot of pressure in the closing stages, they held out for victory.

St Joseph’s, Tulla 1-13   Mallow 0-12

St Joseph’s, Tulla led from the start in their first round game with Mallow at Claughaun.

At half time the score was 1-9 to 0-7 with the goal coming from Colin Corbett and they went on to hold the upperhand in the second period.

Impressive for the winners on the day were Ciarán Cooney, Eoin Tuohy, Oisin Donnellan, Colin Corbett and Niall Bolton.

Harty Cup

The race for the Dr Harty Cup resumes after the mid-term break next Wednesday (November 14) with the meeting of Clare’s only two schools in the race.

Clarecastle will host the clash of St Flannan’s and St Caimin’s, Shannon, at 1.30pm.

St Flannan’s have maximum points from their two outings so far while St Caimin’s have lost both of their games. The Shannon school must win to keep alive their slim hopes of progress to the next stage of the competition.

On the same afternoon Ard Scoil Rís will travel to Cahir to play St Colman’s of Fermoy.

In the Senior B Hurling Championship, two Clare schools will be in action on Wednesday.

Rice College Ennis will travel to Meelick to take on Hospital while St Joseph’s Tulla will face St Augustines from Dungarvan at Tipperary. both of these games will also be at 1.30pm.
