FINE Gael town councillor Liam Williams was elected Mayor of Kilrush at last Thursday’s Kilrush Town Council AGM.
In his acceptance speech, Councillor Williams highlighted a number of issues he feels need to be dealt with in the town during his year as town mayor. He urged banks in Kilrush to help local people who are endeavouring to open new businesses and create employment.
“Financial institutions are vital to the development of business and jobs. May I make a special plea to the institutions in Kilrush to provide credit lines to people with sound businesses and sound business ideas to enable them promote support and develop commerce in this area.
“Funding must flow if business is to be done,” he stated, adding that improved broadband is also a must for the town.
He also said the town needs to improve aspects of traffic management.
“Over the past two years, there has been a change in traffic patterns within the town. This requires the town council to use its voice and resources to address the safety and convenience issue arising from these changes.
“Because of the importance which I attach to safety traffic management, I am using this occasion to draw the attention of the manager to the Limekiln Cross/Glen Street/Ennis Road junction where four roads converge and I am requesting the town manager to urgently examine and improve the position,” Mayor Williams said.
First elected to Kilrush Town Council in June 2009, Mayor Williams says that another of his priorities will be the development of improved sporting infrastructure in the town.
“Our town has a young community and a great history of sporting involvement. We need, however, to expand the existing sports facilities and develop an all-weather pitch.
“I am glad that discussions involving Kilrush Community School, the ESB, the Clare Sports Partnership and ourselves are progressing.
“This is an issue which must be prioritised and Kilrush Town Council will endeavour to do all in its power to advance the project,” he stressed.
Fine Gael town councillor Ian Lynch was elected deputy town mayor.
