Victory not enough to save Cooraclare from relegation

Cooraclare             0-14
Clondegad             1-10

Cooraclare travelled to Ballynacally on Saturday knowing that only a victory over the home side would give them a chance of avoiding relegation.
A last minute point from Michael Kelly gave Cooraclare victory but results elsewhere didn’t work in their favour and they find themselves relegated to Division 3 for the coming season.
Rory Donnelly opened the scoring with a point for the winners but Clondegad soon took control and a Gary Brennan goal in the fourth minute gave them a lead they would hold until the final quarter. Points from Paudge McMahon (2) and Brennan saw the winners go 1-3 to 0-1 in front after ten minutes.
Cooraclare battled back and when the half time whistle sounded, a goal separated the sides with the score at 1-7 to 0-7.
The third quarter was dominated by the visitors and they had drawn level by the eighth minute of the half with scores from John Looney (2) and Cathal Lillis. As the third quarter drew to a close Rory Donnelly put them in front and Looney quickly doubled the lead.
The second half was 20 minutes old before the home side had their first score of the half, a Kieran Browne point. Donnelly put two between them again but a share of the spoils looked likely when Paudge McMahon and substitute Brian Carigg, just back from Australia, pointed. Cooraclare had the final say, however, and Michael Kelly fisted the winning point in injury time.
