Victory for Doonbeg Golf club members


In the annual competition at Doonbeg Links in which the club members take on a team representing management and staff, the club team was victorious.

The members of the winning team were Seamus Griffin and Pat O’Malley, Declan Conway and Vivian Killeen, Paddy O’Grady and Kevin Hayes, Pat Cotter and Diarmaid O’Donnell, Nigel Dillon and David Tubridy, Timmy Killeen and Noel McMahon and Sean Neylon and Hugh McNally.

Michael Waters presented the Mountrivers Cup to Seamus Griffin, captain at Doonbeg Links, at a reception in Darby’s Bar.

The next competition will be the annual Christmas scramble on Thursday, December 27.

Ennis
Ennis Seniors held their annual hampers 14-hole competition last Thursday in which 104 competed. The winner was Michael Considine with 36 points followed by Paddy Cahill (35), Tony Coote (34), Seamus Frehill (34), John Cullinane (33), Ned Ryan (33), Ollie Kenneally (33), Eamon Corry (33), Noel Connellan (33) and Pat Rutherford (32).

An enjoyable social evening followed in the clubhouse.

In the weekly turkey fourball on Sunday, the winners were Brian O’Gorman and Martin Meehan with 50 points. They had one to spare over Shane Collins and John McInerney, with Frank Landy and Ger O’Halloran a further point back. In fourth spot on 47 points were Eamonn Corry and Ollie Kennelly followed by Willie Delaney and Michael Torpey with 46 points, Joe Carmody and John Lillis also with 46 points, with seventh spot filled by Eamonn Corry and Micheal O’Reilly, with a similar score. TJ Scanlan was the winner of the golfer of the year award at Ennis and he was presented with the award by club captain Joe Carmody at a recent function.

Lahinch
Walter O’Brien (13) was the winner of the men’s singles Stableford competition on the old course in Lahinch on Saturday. He returned a score of 39 points to win by one from Adrian Lyons McMahon (6).

The men’s turkey fourball on Sunday was won by the father and son combination of Jim (18) and Ronan Cooney (4) with 44 points.

East Clare

There was an excellent turnout for the drive-in of 2013 captains at East Clare, Mary Collins and Derek Kenny, on Sunday.

Front nine and back nine competitions were held in conjunction with the drive-in. The winners of the front nine were Jim Greene, Noreen Doyle and Donal Fleming from Maurice Costelloe, Terry Mulvihill, Paul Truss and Catherine Minogue, with third spot filled by Brendan Foley, Bernie Bohan and William Hayes.

In the back nine competition, the winners were Val Donnellan, Noreen Ryan, Vinny Henchy and Mary Hogan from Bill Cullen, Brigid Minogue and Andrew Moloney while third place was filled by Stephen Moloney, Phil Burke, Breda O’Loghlin and Oonagh McElhinney.

In the ladies’ nine hole re-entry competition, Margaret McNamara won from Brigid Minogue. The winner of the senior ladies’ competition was Bernie Bohan from Pat Williams, with Mary Collins in third place. In the ladies’ Christmas game, the winner was Margaret McNamara from Mary Collins with Patricia Kerr in third spot.

The winter league is in full swing at present. The format up until January 13 is a mixed three-ball scramble. In addition, players can also submit their nine-hole singles cards over the next three months.

Portumna
In the men’s 14-hole competition at Portumna on Sunday, the winner of the O-10 category was Dermot Murphy (7) with 34 points. Alan Hayes (14) won the 11-14 category with 32 points, James O’Meara (16) with 29 points won the 15-18 category, Padraic Cahalan (19) won the 19 and over category with 36 points, while the seniors winner was Des Madden (19) with 34 points.

The club is holding a 14-hole open voucher competition over the Christmas period and into the new year while the three-ball open is running until April.

Gort
In the 18-hole singles competition at Gort at the weekend, the winner was Derek Kinsella (18) with 43 points from Pat McNamara (22) with 41 points and Ray Dolan (16) with 41 points. The gross was won by John Greer (5) with 33 points.

There will be an 18-hole singles Stableford competition this weekend and another singles competition on St Stephen’s Day.

In the ladies Christmas cracker competition, Ann Jordan (33) was the winner with 88 points from Siobhán Forde (11) with 84 points, Róisín Walsh (33) with 81 points, Sara Broderick (21) with 80 points, Helen McCormick (20) with 79 points, Phil Mulkerrins (26) with 79 points, Gabrielle Warnock (23) with 79 points and Patricia Skehill (26) with 78 points. The ladies’ spring league commences on January 1.

Kilrush
The men’s senior Christmas outing at Kilrush was won by John Stapleton, Maurice Roche and Tom Cleary from John Robinson, Jimmy McSwiggan and Sean Moran, with third spot filled by Tom Prendeville, Bill Murphy and Barry Taylor.

In the weekly singles, the winner was James Murtagh with 29 points. The weekly singles competition will run from Sunday to Saturday inclusive and re-entry is allowed.

Dromoland
The winner of the singles competition at Dromoland at the weekend was Richard Flynn with 41 points from Pat O’Brien with 39 points and John O’Neill with 39 points. Next week’s competition is for wine hampers.

Clare Teachers

Ennis was the venue on Saturday for the Christmas outing of the Clare Teachers Golf Society. The competition took the format of a team outing and the winners were John McNeilis, Peter Quinn and Fintan McEvoy, who scored 94 points. They had one to spare over Joe McMahon, Michael Kilmartin, Diarmuid McMahon and Joan Murphy. In third spot, with 91 points, were John Stack, Sean Daly and Kathleen Frehill. In fourth spot, with 90 points, were Frank Coffey, James Meade and Alan Dunne followed by Conor Murphy, Brendan McNamara and Pat McNamara with 89 points, Jim McMahon, Seamus Frehill and Betty O’Riordan with 87 points, John Doyle, Joe Griffin and Eugene McMahon with 80 points and Michael Drew, Jack Keane and Ann McMahon with 79 points.
The society’s next outing will be on January 5 to ­Lahinch.

Shannon
In the ladies’ 12-hole singles competition at Shannon, the winner was Eleanor O’Brien with 30 points from Lynn Kelly on 28 and Jyoti Patel on 27.

In the men’s team-of-four competition last weekend the winners were Mike O’Connor, John Morrissey, Andrew and John Pearse with 93 points. They were followed by Christy Moylan, Fergus Coughlan, Joe Robbins and Liam Fitzgerald with 82 points.
Spanish Point

In the seniors’ competition at Spanish Point last week, the winner was Tony Crowley (20) with 37 points.

In the singles Stableford at the weekend, Ramond Ward (15) was the winner with 38 points from Tony Crowley (19) with a similar score, with third spot filled by Noel Connellan (16) with 38 points.

This weekend, there will be a singles competition, an open singles on St Stephen’s Day and a singles on the weekend of December 29/30. Timesheets for all are available in the clubhouse.

On Sunday last, the men’s and ladies’ committees organised a year-end social function at the clubhouse, which included various presentations. The ladies’ committee ran a raffle fundraiser over the past few months and lady captain Helen Sullivan presented a cheque for €4,905 to Eoghan O’Loughlin, captain and chairperson of the management committee.

Haven Arms ­Society

The recently formed Haven Arms Society, Kilrush, will have an outing to Kilrush this Saturday, when the tee will be available at 10am.

Pitch and putt

Gerry Kierce was the overall winner when the Clare Road Pitch and Putt Club held its Christmas competition on Sunday. Denis McElligott was second followed by PJ Considine and Garath Kerin. Marty Fawl won the gross.

The club’s AGM will take place this Sunday at 9am.
