Up Close and Personal with Frankie Gavin and De Danann

THE Island Music Club Presents Frankie Gavin and De Dannan as part of their Up Close and Personal Tour on Saturday, December 29 in Minogue’s Bar, Tulla.
The event kicks off in the backroom of Minogue’s from 9pm. Frankie Gavin and De Dannan return to Tulla in the middle of their 32-county tour of Ireland. Their tour is taking the band to a variety of venues and locations, which would not ordinarily play host to such a well-known band or, in some cases, events of this type.
According to Frankie, the move is largely motivated by the band’s wish to “lift the hearts of the Irish people during this extraordinary economic climate in Ireland”.
As a result, the band is, for the most part, bringing its music to local communities throughout Ireland.
The current De Dannan ensemble is led by Frankie on fiddle, flutes and whistles and he is joined by Barry Brady on accordion, Colm O’Caoimh on guitar, Paul O’Driscoll on double bass and Michelle Lally on vocals.
Galway man Frankie was named the fastest fiddle player in the world in the Guinness World Records in 2010. Together with De Dannan, he has been responsible for bringing some of Ireland’s immensely talented traditional performers to the world stage.
Part of Frankie’s enduring appeal lies in his astounding technical ability and unceasing quest for innovation. Musical pieces more commonly associated with the likes of the Beatles and George Frideric Handel now find common place in Frankie’s repertoire as an Irish musician.
Most pertinent of all is the knack he has for imparting his own enthusiasm, the sheer joy and the magic of great music-making to his audience.
He has a gift for absorbing and switching between styles and evidently has paid detailed attention to the variety of Irish regional styles.
