Éire Óg 3-3   Whitegate 3-1

ÉIRE Óg hosted Whitegate in Round 2 of the U-14C Championship on Wednesday evening. The weather was the only thing that was dull in the encounter, which turned into a thriller between the evenly matched teams.

Whitegate’s centre-forward Niamh Quirke pointed in the opening minutes but a Chloe Barry free soon levelled matters. Éire Óg drove on and pulled ahead, courtesy of a cracking goal from Róisín Martin. The home side’s advantage was short lived, however, as Whitegate breached an otherwise solid defence to strike for goal.

The match was in the 30th minute before Whitegate goaled again, Amy Solan finding the net to give them a three-point advantage at the break.

Whitegate’s third goal, from the stick of Quirke, came immediately at the restart of the match and gave them an unassailable lead. The home side, however, dug deep and battled on, with hardworking mid-fielder, Ciara Kennedy, striking twice in quick succession to level matters.

A second Chloe Barry free gave Éire Óg the minimum advantage. Whitegate fought hard to restore their lead but were thwarted on every occasion by a strong backline. With the result hanging in the balance, Éire Óg managed to hold on to and add to their advantage, with a well-taken point from Kennedy.

Éire Óg: Leah Ryan; Saoirse Warren, Eva Whyte; Mary Tiernan; Maria Redmond, Elaine Walsh; Ciara Kennedy (2-1), Alana McInerney; Lia Kelly, Leanne Russell, Róisín Martin (1-0); Amy Russell, Chloe Barry (0-2).
