Tyrrell, Browne and Glackin to play Minogue’s

Ronan Browne, Kevin Glackin and Sean Tyrrell will perform together at Minogue’s, Tulla on Saturday, June 11.SOME of the most respected musicians on Ireland’s traditional/folk scene are coming to Tulla.
Sean Tyrrell, Kevin Glackin and Ronan Browne will be playing at Minogue’s Bar in Tulla on Saturday, June 11 starting at 9.15pm.
The three have been playing together for well over 20 years but they have just responded to requests from fans for a CD of songs and tunes, which they are following up with gigs all over Ireland.
Commenting on the tour, Sean Tyrrell said, “Although the three of us are old hands in the business, we are very much looking forward to this tour. We respect one another’s talents and know that, as always, we will each benefit from this collaboration. We are also confident that our audiences will have the opportunity to enjoy an honest performance.”
Speaking to The Clare Champion last week, following the first couple of gigs, Ronan Browne said they had got off to a good start. “We began last weekend in Listowel and Dingle. We had to draft in an emergency replacement because all leave was rescinded for the guards and we had to bring in Liam Lewis for Kevin and he fitted like a glove. But now the Queen and Obama are gone we can get back to normal.”
He said what people will find at the gigs is much the same as is on the CD and that it has had a good response. “Everyone is loving it and we do too. It comes from what we do on stage. At the gigs, the people in the audience have smug grins on their faces because it’s easygoing, warm and friendly. There’s no showing off or musicians being clever, it’s stuff the audience love.”
He said the trio go back a long way. “I’ve known Kevin since I was a child and Sean, I met in Conway’s pub in Mullagh in Clare. I remember I was just in the pub playing and Tyrell came in. He was going out with a friend of mine and I loved the way he sang. He wasn’t clean cut, there were rough edges to him. The way he remembers it, there was someone pooh poohing him and I waded back into the session to save him. I started playing these mad tunes and these very important musicians who were there were going nuts.”
Ronan is originally from Dublin but has lived in Spiddal for the last 10 years. He has spent most of his life as a professional musician, playing pipes, flutes and whistles. He has been involved in over 100 album recordings since he first ventured into the studio in 1982 and has collaborated with many top traditional Irish, classical, pop, jazz and country artists.
His music has been used in films such as Circle of Friends, Rob Roy and Gangs of New York. Possibly the strangest place his music has been placed was in the Playboy video of Farrah Fawcett, All of Me.
Although born in Galway City, Sean Tyrrell has lived in Clare for many years. He was part of the Greenwich Village folk scene of the late ’60s while in the early ’70s, he established himself as a singer in San Francisco.
His first CD Cry of a Dreamer came out in the early ’90s and he was winner of the IMRO’s Best Overall Folk Act award. His second solo record The Orchard came out in 1999 and was met with critical acclaim. Sean’s performances of the Midnight Court have been an ongoing success in various forms.
Kevin Glackin comes from a musical family in Dublin and he started playing the fiddle at the age of six. A duet album he recorded with his brother, Seamus, entitled Northern Lights has won critical acclaim, while an album he made with Davy Spillane entitled Forgotten Days was voted traditional album of the year by the readers of Irish Music Magazine. He has toured extensively in Europe, the US and Asia.
