Two Clare schools progress in Corn Phadraig

When the draw for the quarter-finals of the Munster Colleges Senior B Hurling Championship (Corn Phadraig) are made early in the new year, two Clare schools will have their names in the hat.

Despite suffering a four-point defeat to Hospital, Rice College from Ennis have won through on score difference while St Joseph’s, Tulla are also through, having accounted for St Augustine’s, Dungarvan.

Hospital   3-12      Rice College   1-14
Knowing that they needed to win to have any chance of remaining in the competition, Hospital displayed great determination when they lined out against Rice College at Meelick.

The Ennis side failed to match this intensity and this proved to be the difference on the day.
Hospital held a four-point lead at half-time when the score was 1-7 to 0-6 and while Rice College fought back strongly in the third quarter, helped by a goal from Liam Lynch, to take a two point lead, they were unable to hold this.

They will be disappointed at the manner in which they conceded two goals in the second period, scores that proved costly on the day.

Best for the Ennis side were Ritchie Hennessy, Michael O’Malley, Liam Lynch, Conor O’Halloran and Colm Fitzgerald.

With three teams level on points, score difference determines the placings and Youghal and Rice College go through to the play-offs, with Hospital losing out.

St Joseph’s, Tulla booked a place in the quarter-finals when they accounted for St Augustine’s from Dungarvan at Tipperary on Wednesday.

They got off to a dream start with a goal from Colin Corbett in the opening minute and this helped them to lead by two points at half-time when the score was 1-8 to 0-9.

They also had a dream start to the second half when John O’Brien scored the first of his two goals and they sealed victory with a second Corbett goal shortly before the full-time whistle.

In what was a good team display, Eoin Tuohy, Oisín Donnellan, Colin Corbett and John O’Brien were particularly prominent for the Tulla school.

Corn Uí Mhuiri

The final round of games in the group stage of the Corn Uí Mhuiri Senior A Football Championship will take place next Wednesday when both West and North Clare amalgamations will be chasing their first wins of the season.

Meelick is the venue for the meeting of North Clare and West Limerick at 1.30pm while at the same time West Clare will face Macroom.

St Flannan’s have a bye next week as they are part of a three-team group. With one win and a loss to date, they look to be safely through to the play-offs. The quarter-finals are set for January 23.
