Two-car collision claims life of young man

GARDAÍ in Ennistymon are appealing for information after a two-car collision in West Clare on Tuesday, which claimed the life of a young man.
The crash happened on the outskirts of Milltown Malbay on the Ennistymon Road at approximately 5.10pm.
Twenty-year-old Mattie McInerney from Miltown Malbay was pronounced dead at the scene. Three others were taken to hospital.
The Clare Champion understands that the deceased man had taken a lift in a Blue Honda Civic shortly before the fatal collision. The car in which he was a passenger was travelling on the Ennistymon Road in the direction of Lahinch and was in collision with a wine coloured Ford Focus coming from the opposite direction.
The driver of the Honda Civic and the two occupants of the Ford Focus were brought for medical treatment in Ennis. One of the people travelling in the Ford was detained in hospital.
“We would like to hear from anyone who might have been in the area at the time. It was close to five o’clock, a lot of people would be just finishing work maybe, it was nice weather so there were a good few people on the roads at the time,” said Garda Superintendent Declan Mulcahy.
Gardaí are especially interested to hear from a driver who may have stopped at the scene of the incident before gardaí arrived.
“There is a suggestion that there was a person at the scene in a jeep and this person may have left the area before the gardaí arrived. We are not suggesting they are involved but they might be able to give us additional information,” Superintendent Mulcahy concluded.
The road was closed for a technical examination overnight but has now reopened to traffic.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Ennistymon Garda Station on 065 7072180, The Garda Confidential Telephone Line 1800 666 111 or any garda station.
