Two arrested after pipe bomb discovery

TWO men arrested in connection with the discovery of a viable pipe bomb device at Cappa Beg, Barefield have been released without charge and a file is being prepared for the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Gardaí from the divisional detective unit in Ennis arrested two men in their early 20s, believed to be from the Ennis area, on Tuesday morning at approximately 1am following the discovery of the suspicious device in a vehicle. The two men were detained until 11.15am on Wednesday and were released without charge.
The discovery was made after a vehicle was stopped and, given the nature of the device, an EOD team was notified. Having arrived at scene, the team were able to make the device safe without conducting a controlled explosion.
It is understood the pipe bomb was a viable device and was “capable of causing injury”. The Clare Champion understands the two men arrested are not believed to be affiliated with any organised criminals or dissident group.
On discovery of the device, the area was cordoned off and the area was technically examined and later deemed clear.
Gardaí are now awaiting a full ballistics report and the device has been forwarded to Garda Headquarters for forensic analysis.
