Turnpike Rovers 2 Kilrush Rangers 1
(after extra time)
TURNPIKE Rovers retained their first division status for the coming season when they defeated Kilrush Rangers in a promotion/relegation play-off at the County Grounds last week.
Kilrush Rangers enjoyed the better of the first-half exchanges and led at half-time through a Robert Carey penalty. They had chances to stretch that lead but failed to avail of them.
Five minutes into the second half, Ian McMahon scored for the ’Pike to level the game and from here to the finish of normal time, they had the better of the exchanges but failed to take the lead.
In the fifth minute of extra time, the ’Pike were awarded a penalty when David McMahon was judged to have been taken down in the area. Martin Danagher was sent off and to add to Kilrush’s woes, Dean O’Grady converted the resultant spot kick, which sealed victory for the Ennis side.
