St Joseph’s Tulla booked a place in the semi-final of Corn Phadraig, Munster Colleges Senior B Hurling Championship, when they proved too strong for St Joseph’s Borris-Illeigh at rain lashed Meelick on Wednesday.

A powerful second quarter proved decisive in this tie and the East Clare side now go on to play Youghal in the semi-final.

The North Tipperary school made the better start and they led 0-3 to 0-0 after seven minutes. Two minutes later the winners opened their account and from here to the half time whistle they enjoyed the upperhand.

They had the first of their goals at the mid point of the half when Mark Lynch applied the finish after Diarmuid Moloney had created the opening. A Darren Chaplin run created the opening and full-forward Colin Corbett duly obliged for the second. Just over a minute later they struck again and this time Evan McMahon found the net to leave the half time score at 3-4 to 0-3 in the Clare school’s favour.

Borris-Illeigh needed to step up in the second half and they showed greater determination on the resumption. Tulla had the opening score however, through Darren Chaplin whose kicked effort went over the bar.

After this, the losers got a grip and four points followed without reply, two frees and a ’65 from Ryan Tuohy and one from play from Ciaran Maher.

At the mid-point of the half Colin Corbett converted a free for the winners but Borris-Illeigh hit back with three more from Tuohy to cut the margin to six points, 3-6 to 0-9.

They weren’t to score again, however, and Tulla finished out strongly with substitute Stephen Conway scoring their goal. The losers played the final ten minutes with 14 players after they had corner back Dan Ryan sent off.

The winners half-back trio of Eoin Tuohy, Niall Bolton and Ciaran Cooney did well as did Con Smith at midfield while up front Colin Corbett and Diarmuid Moloney were always a handful for a fancied North Tipperary team.

Rice College seek to advance

Rice College Ennis will travel to Golden next Wednesday to face the competition favourites, Dungarvan CBS, in the last of the Corn Phadraig quarter finals.

With the bulk of their side involved in the Dungarvan colleges amalgamation, which has qualified for the Dr Harty Cup semi-final, the Waterford side will be very difficult to stop.

The Ennis side had a two point win over Youghal CBS (2-14 to 1-15) before losing out to Hospital (3-12 to 1-14) but they qualified on score difference for the play offs.

Amongst those that team mentor Martin Brooks will be looking to are Lee Brady, Richard Hennessy, Liam Lynch, Colm Fitzgerald Conor Finnucane and Michael O’Malley.
