Tulla take control in second half

The scoreline suggests a runaway victory for St Joseph’s, Tulla, in the Clare Colleges Senior Hurling final at Bodyke on Tuesday afternoon and, while St Joseph’s justified favouritism with a win, it was tighter than the scoreline suggests.

At half-time just three points separated the teams with the new champions leading, 0-7 to 0-4. At the end of the opening quarter, Tulla were ahead 0-2 to 0-1 with the Scariff half-back line of Cathal Madden, John Scanlon and Donal McNamara doing well

The introduction of Justin Nelson and fine hurling from the Tulla midfield team of captain Oisin Donnellan and Con Smyth kept the scoreboard ticking over but there was some concern amongst supporters when they were only three points in front at the break after playing with the aid of the breeze.

Everything pointed to a close second half but this did not turn out to be the case

On the restart the Tulla half-line of Ciarán Cooney, Niall Bolton and Eoin Tuohy took over and provided a ready supply of ball for the full-forward line, where Mark Lynch and Steven Conway ran riot. Three excellent goals from Lynch (2) and Conway in the opening 12 minutes of the half decided the game.

The final blow for Scariff was when David McGrath was sent off on a second yellow after 49 minutes, as Mark Lynch went through on goal. Tulla ran out convincing winners taking some great scores in the last quarter.
Overall, this a fine team display for the winners after their recent Munster final loss to Dungarvan CBS. Best for Scariff on the day were the half-back line of Cathal Madden, John Scanlon, Diarmuid McNamara along with Eoin Quirke.
After the game John Fawl, secondary school’s liaison officer for Clare, presented the cup to Tulla captain Oisin Donnellan.
