NAMED after soccer legend Roy Keane’s famous Labrador, Triggs of Inagh obliged for her Inagh connections in the feature race, the final of the Food Packages A7 525 Stake, at Galway on Saturday night.
As the runners went to traps, Kay Lynch’s Moya Mae headed the market at 6/4 and although she was well enough away, she had no answer to the early toe of Triggs of Inagh, owned by Aisling Arthur, on the run towards the opening bend.
Exiting the back, Moya Mae was within a length of the Triggs of Inagh but the daughter of Droopy’s Scolari and Cathy of Inagh stayed on well to prevail by a length and a quarter from the fast-finishing Killuran Lady, owned by Gary Cooney from Killuran, Bradford and trained by his father, Donal in 29.62.
The top graded event on the card was the A1 graded eighth contest over 525 yards in which the run to the bend was always going to be crucial to the overall outcome and so it proved as the Stephen Murray-trained Derrew Milly broke smartly towards the outside and the daughter of Crash and Cathy Ann led by a length from Carol’s Contender and Cragbrien Hondo.
Turning down the back, Derrew Milly and Carol’s Contender kicked clear of their rivals and they had it between them approaching the penultimate corner, where Carol’s Contender went for a gap on the rail but the door was shut firmly in her face as Derrew Milly stayed on gamely to hold her renewed challenge up the straight for a half-length success in 29.31.
The winner is owned by James Murphy, Kilkishen and trained in Sixmilebridge by Stephen Murray.
Murray, who has his kennels at Derra, had to be content with third place in the A1 graded seventh contest over 550 yards with Frankie Sheehan’s I Remember Paddy (Black Shaw-Sheehan’s Cottage).
The race was won in splendid style by Paradise Siesta (Head Bound-Paradise Alanna), owned and trained in Miltown Malbay by Sean Meade, who stayed on strongly to win by three lengths in 30.17.
In the opening semi-final of The Fundraising at the Dogs A3 525, all six runners were away pretty much as one but it was the white-jacketed Glenfort Lee that showed the best early toe on the run to the bend to lead round by a couple of lengths from Glenbrack Paul and Holeinthewall.
Racing down the back, Glenfort Lee, owned in Kinvara by Gina McDonagh, still headed the formation and although challenged on both sides rounding the third bend, the son of Hades Rocket and Glenfort Rumble, trained by her father John, stayed on well to win in 29.60.
Third, a little over two lengths off the pace, was Pinnacle Muffin (Boherduff Light-Coldwar Baby), owned in Ballyvaughan by Douglas Culligan and Michael Costello.
In the third semi-final, Ebony Blitz, handled by Quin trainer Francis Browne, was very smartly into her stride on the wide outside and the daughter of Droopys Kewell and Rathorpe Baby led Knockdine Black by two lengths rounding the opening bend, with Moneypoint Magic in third place.
Passing halfway, the Murphy-Agri Syndicate-owned lady was clear of Knockdine Black, owned by Michael O’Brien, Miltown Malbay, who try as he did could only get within 3 1/2 lengths of Ebony Blitz at the line in 29.15. Third place went to Moneypoint Magic (Top Honcho-Lemon Divine), owned by Madeleine Walsh of Gort.
All six runners were away pretty much on terms for the opening race, the S6 graded 350 yarder and although Roy of Inagh, owned by Sean Arthur in Inagh, led briefly on the run-up, he was swamped approaching the bend by both Sparrows Monty and Willbrook Queen.
Rounding the bend, the Michael Davoren, Ennistymon-owned Willbrook Queen (Prince Monalulu-Missouri Dame) edged to the front and she stayed on well up the straight to score by two lengths in 19.37 from Sparrow’s Monty (Head Bound-Barntick Live), owned by former Clare hurler and manager, Ger O’Loughlin.
Third home was Boherash Torpedo (Hades Rocket-Boherash Charity), owned by Frank Casey, Stonehall, Newmarket.
Third placed in races on the night were Bargain Bound (Head Bound-Hawaiian Sand), owned by Leo McNulty, Drumline, Newmarket and Kinielty Black (Hooter Macooter-Black Banner), owned by Declan McDonagh, Liscannor.
