Tradaree hosts mid-season coursing event

The Clare coursing calendar for 2012-2013 moves into mid-season, with the Tradraee Club hosting their popular meeting next weekend.

For the third year on the trot, the meeting will take place at the well-appointed Lemenaghbeg, Newmarket-on-Fergus venue put at the disposal of the club by Paddy Quinn and family.

After coursing of the highest standard at the Miltown Malbay meeting over the October Bank Holiday, patrons will be hoping for a repeat performance at Tradaree.

Coursing starts on Saturday and Sunday at 11.30 with five stakes – Derby and Oaks, all aged dog and bitch and members stake – on the card.

Bookmaker Dinny Gould puts Sound Pistol the 2-1 favourite for the aged dog stake (16). A Derby semi-finalist two seasons ago, he had a busy and eventful season in the all-age category last year. The Jerry Griffin white and brindled was beaten in the New Ross, Borris-in-Ossory and Cork Cup finals and reached the semi-finals in Limerick City and Ennis-Clarecastle.

However, coming to Tradaree with an even better all-age successs rate is Droopys Babs. Last season, he won cups in Gorey, Old Kilcullen and Wexford to qualify for the Champion Stakes. He will be on the board at 4-1, as will the Pat Curtin-trained Windfarm Eiscir, who will be making his first appearance since beaten just up by the eventual winner at the regional meeting. Also at 4-1 will be Star Point, who performed well at Miltown Malbay for Spanish Point owners Paddy and Gary Egan before being beaten in the cup final by Skellig Way. Patterdale Toby, beaten in the Doon final last season, is given a 5-1 chance.

Kilcummin Lady who reached the last eight in the Oaks two years ago and was beaten in the final of the cup at Ardpatrick and Kilfinane last season, will start the 5-2 favourite for the all-aged bitch stake (16). Regional winner Barrack Becky will also be well fancied at 3-1, as will Shes All Talk, who was the runner-up at the regional. Aristo Catinahat, who performed well at Miltown Malbay for her Clonlara owners, is given a 4-1 chance. Last year’s winner, Job Done, is quoted at 10-1.

With fancied runners in both events, the Derby (32) and Oaks (32) trial stakes should provide plenty of good coursing before the Clonmel qualifiers are known.

The Lemenaghbeg venue has given a new lease of life to the Tradaree Club, whose members have put in a lot of time and energy into developing it into a first-class stretch.

Club member Tony Reddan will be judge and the slipper on duty will be Brian Doyle.
