Toy gun is recalled from sale

A TOY gun, which was available for sale in Clare, has been recalled after the Environmental Protection Agency tested a similar one bought in Limerick and found that it contained more than six times the permitted concentration of lead.  A TOY gun, which was available for sale in Clare, has been recalled after the Environmental Protection Agency tested a similar one bought in Limerick and found that it contained more than six times the permitted concentration of lead.
Well-known discount store Euro2, or Euro General Retail Ltd, which has outlets in Ennis and Shannon as well as 47 others nationwide, has sold approximately 4,000 units in Ireland.
The company published advertisements in three national newspapers in recent days recalling a “toy foam pistol with light and sound” and another product, “a toy foam sword with light and sound” from the market.
According to a spokesperson for the Ennis store, “There are signs up in the shop telling people about the recall. Anyone who has bought the products that are being recalled can bring them into any Euro2 shop and receive a full refund.”
On September 21, the EPA directed Euro General Retail Limited to withdraw the toy foam pistol from the market after one purchased from Euro2 on William Street in Limerick was found to contain lead in the item’s grey foam material and some electrical insulation that exceeded the permitted level. According to the EPA’s analysis, these two constituents were found to contain lead at concentrations of approximately four times and approximately six times the permitted concentration of 1000mg/kg.
Under the EPA direction, the company is required to place notices of the recall of the non-compliant product in three national newspapers for three consecutive days, to post a copy of the notice in all of its stores in the Republic and to manage returned product as Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment.
Euro General Retail Limited appealed this to the Circuit Court on October 13, seeking that the direction be withdrawn, but withdrew this appeal on November 2, 2009.
The EPA sought a High Court Order to require Euro General Retail Limited to comply with the direction.
The company published the required notice in the Irish Examiner, Irish Daily Mail and Irish Daily Mirror on Tuesday.
