THE Tomás Mac Cormaic Annual Golf Classic will take place at Shannon Golf Club on Monday, July 1.
All proceeds will be going to the Shannon Senior Citizens’ Club to assist them in their extension of their premises into the adjoining property.
The classic is being run by Councillor Sean McLoughlin. “The last time I was mayor in 2009/2010, I was asked by some members of the Senior Citizens’ Club to help them raise some funds so they could purchase the house next door. Indeed, I was delighted to be in a position to select the senior citizens’ club as one of two recipients of the proceeds from the recent Mayor’s Charity Ball,” he said.
“In excess of €5,000 was raised at the event and that was divided equally between the Shannon Flyers’ Team and the Shannon Senior Citizens’ Group. That year and every year since, I have held a golf classic to assist the senior citizens’ club in their fundraising ventures. I would like to acknowledge the support and help I got from Tomás MacCormaic in running the golf classic and the mayor’s ball, that is why the golf classic is named after him,” Councillor McLoughlin added.
The senior citizens’ club offers a lot to its members, he added. “It was established more than 30 years ago, when they bought the house in Purcell Park in which they regularly meet for social interchange. From this clubhouse, meals on wheels are delivered to members who are infirmed and confined to their homes, lunches are also provided in the clubhouse on certain weekdays for those who are mobile but unable to cook for themselves.
“The club also arranges bingo sessions, card games, Scrabble and other games for their members. The number of senior citizens has greatly increased and their house in Purcell Park can no longer cater for the numbers so the club has bought the house next door to provide larger accommodation to adequately serve the needs of their members and this will require substantial fundraising ventures.”
Teams of four can enter and tee times can be reserved by calling the Shannon Golf Pro-Shop at 061 471551.
