TJ wins captain’s prize at Lahinch

The captain’s (Ray Hennessy) prize was played for at Lahinch on Friday and Saturday with a playoff on Sunday.
The winner was TJ Kerins with 60 points, two ahead of Tom Doyle who was followed by Pat Burke, also with 58 points. In fourth place was Ciaran Fitzpatrick with 57 points followed by John Herlihy on 56, Peter Cloonan on 56, Jonathan Fennelly on 56, Tom Saunders on 55, Ger Dunworth on 55 and Greg young on 55.
The gross was won by Eddie Power with 57 points from Mike Kemmy on 48.
First on Friday was Tony Molloy with 38 points followed by Kerrill O’Mahony on 36 points. On Saturday, John Leonard with 37 points was first followed by David Sherry on 36.
On the Castle Course in the seniors category the winner was Pat Cronin with 35 points followed by Jarlath Staunton with a similar score. Mark McGrath won the junior’s prize with 36 points. The winner of the past captain’s prize was Richard Pyne with 34 points while Neil O’Brien, Shannon, won the visitor’s section.
On Sunday, Denis Cullinan recorded a hole in one at the 16th.
The Kilcrene Cup, a ladies fourball Stableford, was the competition on the championship course last Thursday when Mary O.’Mahoney (15) and Bernadette Scanlan (26) emerged victorious with 41 points. They had two to spare over Deirdre McDermott (18) and Jo Heffernan (19) who, in turn, were two ahead of Maeve McCarthy (12) and Mary O’Doherty (13). In fourth spot, also on 37 points, were Mary O’Meara (11) and Rachel Maher (19). The gross was won by Grainne D’Alton and Jenny Cagney with 31 points.
Meanwhile, the ladies fourball competition on the Castle Course was won by Barbara McEvoy (15) and Anna Glynn (17) with 40 points.
In a men’s fourball competition on the championship course for the Dr Browne Cup, the winners were Leonard (6) and Ger Shanahan (14) with 44 points. They had one to spare over Eddie (scratch) and Kevin Ed. Power (11) with third spot filled by Conor Fitzgerald (10) and Gavin Whitaker (12) with 40 points.
The Castle Course hosted a ladies’ invitational fourball on Saturday when the winners were Mary O’Meara (11) and Jude Byrne (18) with 43 points from Siobhán Conway (10) and Mary Malone (11) with 39 points. In third spot with 37 points were Nollie McCarthy (20) and Imelda Gleeson (22) with 37 points followed by Ina Nolan (14) and Rhona Carmody (14) with 36 points. The gross was won by Valerie Shannon (7) and Karen White (23) with 27 points.
The Knox Cup, a ladies singles v par competition, was played for on the championship course on Sunday. Edel Lernihan (31) emerged as the winner with two-up from Georgina Condon (17) with a similar score. In third spot was Lynn Slattery (21), also with two-up. Olivia Lucas won the gross with six-down.
In the silver section Patsy McCarthy (12) was the winner with 1 down from Nicola Kenny (2) on a similar score and Rose Doyle (13) on two-down.
Suzanne Hassett (26) won the bronze section with a score of level from Bernadette Scanlan (26) with one down and Katherine Feore (23) with two-down.
The men’s fourball competition on the Castle course on Sunday for the Resident’s Cup was won by Paddy Ryder (12) and Bobby Fleming (18) with 50 points. In second place on 47 points were Jarlath (15) and Robert Staunton (15) followed by Fergus Blake (13) and Gerald Shanahan (13) with 44 points.
This weekend the lady captain’s (Nollie McCarthy) prize will be played for and another big turnout is expected. Tickets for the lady captain’s dinner are available from the office.

Woodstock

Paul Coote (9) won the captain, James Carmody’s prize at Woodstock at the weekend with a score of 101.5. In second place was Mark Barrett (16) on 103 net followed by Ross Darmody (9) with 104.5 net and Greg Corbett (11), also with 104.5 net.
The category winners were Colm Mullen (7), Michael Kelly (12) and Michael Griffin (20). Tony Nugent (5) won the past captain’s prize with 107.5 net.
The senior’s section was won by PJ O’Neill (13) with 105.5 net while the guest’s section was won by Michael O’Dell. In the junior’s section the winner of category one was Aaron Donegan. Gavin Cooney won category two and Cian Ruane won category three.
This week is open week at the club. There will be a modified fourball (any combination) on this Thursday, a-team-of-two scramble (any combination) on Friday and a team of three rumble (any combination) on Saturday.
In the seniors competition last week Brendan Keogh (20) was the winner with 41 points from Brendan McMahon (17) with 37 points.
The winner of the captain’s prize to the ladies was Mary Sadlier with 40 points from Margaret Ann Killeen on 36 points, Una Patton and Ramona Gleeson. Mary Gleeson and Teresa Sherlock won the nines while Marianne McGough won the gross.
The winners of the mixed scramble over 14 holes were Dickie Pyne Aine Burke and Liam Mc Inerney from John Dormer, Patsy Nugent and Frank McEnery.
In the open singles on Monday Brian Aherne (6) was the winner with 38 points from Anthony Sweeney (3) who had a similar score.

Kilrush
In the Crotty’s open singles Stableford competition at Kilrush, John Donnelly (17) was the winner with 40 points from Paul McGibney (22) with 37 points and Terry O’Neill (12) with 36 points.
In a similar competition on the last day of July, Daniel Meade (Rathbane) was the winner with 43 points.
In the Saint Gobain open singles stroke competition, Martin Bourke (14) was the winner with 71 from John Robinson (23) on 79.
The ladies open singles stroke competition on Thursday last was won by Stephanie Roughan (29) with 66 nett from Muriel Kiely (32) with 71 nett, Ailish Lorrigan (16) with 71 nett and Anne Marie Donnellan (34) with 72 nett. Anne Brennan (11) won the gross with 84 while the nines were won by Agnes Shannon with 33 and Mary Lyons, also with 33.
The winners of Friday’s 18-hole mixed competition were Pat Shannon and Margaret Clancy from Finbar McMahon and Helen Williams with Ollie McNamara and Anne Coote in third place. Declan O’Donovan and Ailish Lorrigan won the gross.
Saturday’s open singles was won by Tom Coffey (12) with 46 points from Diarmuid Murphy (6) with 40 points and Seamus O’Doherty (8) with 36 points.
There was an open singles stroke competition on Sunday when the winner was David Byrnes (12) with 39 points from Michael Hogan (18) with 37 points and Sean Moran (20) with 36 points.
The Howard Perpetual trophy, an 18-hole mixed competition, will take place on this Friday.
The lady captains (Mary O’Sullivan) prize will be played for this Sunday. Time sheets for all events are available in the clubhouse.
The Presidents mixed will be the competition on Friday, August 17, and the draw for partners will be made at 6pm. The golf will be followed by Seafood BBQ that was postponed in July due to inclement weather.

Spanish Point

On this Saturday Spanish Point will host the Mocad Interclub Challenge for clubs in Munster with less than 18-holes. Players from three handicap categories represent their club in a team of three that is played in Stableford format.
Fourteen teams have entered for this Munster competition that was started last year and the holders are Ringenane Golf Club. Members should note that the course will be closed until 3.30pm on Saturday.
The Dan Gallery Cup club matchplay has reached the final from an entry of 40 players and promising junior Ross Burke (12) will meet Fergal Hehir (17) to decide the winner of this competition which was revived this year.
Over 40 golfers entered the Friday open and visitor Michael Daly from Belcarrick won with 34 points from Willie MacNamara (16) also on 34 points.
This week’s competition was won by David Egan (9) with 38 points while the open nine-hole team event that evening was won by P J Kyne (20), Fergal Hehir (17), Ian Downes (28) and Sean McMahon (10) with four-under gross.
The weekend’s golfer of the year singles competition played in strokeplay format was won by Gary Carroll (13) with 63 nett (par 68), from Brian O’Loughlin (11) 64 nett, Joe O’Rourke (12) 65 nett, and David Keane (11) 65 nett.
The Bank Holiday Monday 18-hole open was won by junior golfer Stephen Cunningham (18) with a great score in difficult conditions of 40 points.
Opens continue on Tuesday and Friday and timesheets are in the clubhouse.
The lady captain’s charity competition was played for last Sunday when the winner was Geraldine Reddan (22) with 42 points from Fiona Coffey with Moira Sheedy in third place.
Karen Twomey (10) was the recent winner of an 18-hole competition at the club with 43 points.
Cogan’s open day takes place next Monday. A timesheet will operate with details available from 065 7084198.

Gort
The open week competitions at Gort have been attracting good entries and scoring has been good.
The winner of Monday’s open singles was Ed Purcell (15) with 41 points from Eamon Grimes (14) 40 points and Philip McInerney (15) also with 40 points. the gross was won by Tony Finnegan with 34 points.
In the weekend singles competition, the winner was Jerry Leahy (10) with 39 points from James Mulqueen (13) with a similar score. John Williams, also with 39 points, was in third spot while the gross was won by Alan Minogue (6) with 33 points.
The winner of Frank Higgins captain’s prize was Gerard Connors with 131 from Mike McNamara (134) David Daly (137), Paddy Jordan (137), Steve Mahon (142), Kevin Mulkerrins (143) and Brian McLoughlin (143). The gross was won by Chris Murphy with 79 nett.
Other prizewinners were: past captain – Michael O’Grady 73; seniors – Gerry Cahill 77; distance member – Martin Anderson 68; beginner – Ian Higgins; back nine – Dara Smith; front eight – Ollie Fahy; nearest the pin – Martin Anderson; longest drive – Enda Cradock.
In the ladies singles the winner was Phil Mulkerrins (27) with 37 points from Bernie Diskin (13) with 37 points, Teresa Gill (17) with 36 points. Siobhán Forde (11) won the gross with 21 points. Phil Mulkerrins had a hole in one at the fifth.
In the Monday open singles the winner was Hannah McInerney (9) with 39 points from Catherine Clancy (25) with 35 points.

East Clare
The winner of the men’s 18-hole singles at East Clare at the weekend was Dermot McNamara (13) with 43 points. He had three to spare over Ger Beatty (15) with third spot filled by Denis Corcoran (20) also with 40 points.
Next weekend the men’s club have an 18-hole stroke competition and the ladies club will have an 18-hole Stableford event.

Portumna
The winner of the men’s 18-hole Stableford competition at Portumna at the weekend was Niall Concannon (10) with 41 points from John Kennedy (16) with a similar score and Tony Harte (20) with 40 points. The gross was won by John Cleary (4) with 33 points. The winner of the seniors’ section was Liam Horan (2) with 34 points.
Saturday’s open Stableford competition was won by Kevin Power (14) with 41 points from Ronan Madden (14) with 38 points and Eoin Phelan (10) with 38 points. The gross was won by Conor O’ ‘Dwyer (2) with 32 points.
Monday’s winner was Patrick Monaghan (22) with 43 points from Frank Fallon (16) with 40 points and John Cleary (5) with 36 points. The gross was won by John Harte (8) with 32 points.

Dromoland
The men’s weekend Stableford competition at Dromoland was won by Cormac O’Neill with 42 points from Frank Conway and Brian Arthur, both with 40 points. Gerry Malone with 35 points won the over-18 handicap category.
This weekend is the president’s (Tom Delaney) prize will be played for on Saturday and Sunday.
Dromoland Open Week commences Monday next. Tee times can be booked online or by calling 061 368 444.
Meanwhile, in the ladies competition at the weekend the winner was Beate Porter from Yvonne Shanahan with third spot filled by Mary Arthur.
This weekend’s president prize to the ladies is on Sunday from 2-3pm.

Sixmilebridge
Sixmilebridge society will hold an outing to Charleville on this Saturday August 11. The tee is a vailable from 10.30am.

Clarecastle
Clarecastle Golf Society’s next outing is to Shannon next Thursday when the tee will be available from 2pm to 3.30pm. To book a tee time text 086 3246015.

Pascal O’Brien Memorial
The twelfth annual golf tournament in memory of the late Pascal O’Brien is planned for Ennis Golf Club on Saturday, September 1. The format is an 18-hole singles Stableford competition.
Participation is open to people living in the Hermitage, Cloughleigh and Drumbiggle areas of Ennis as well as Ennis Golf Club members and guests.
Tee times are from 9am-1.30pm and from 3pm-4pm and anyone interested in playing should contact either Michael O’Loughlin (086 8148414) or Patrick Murphy (085 1528958).
Since the inception of the memorial tournament in the region of €20,000 has been raised for local deserving causes and last year a donation of €1,000 was made to Cahercalla Hospice. Proceeds this year will be for local charities.
