Thrilling recovery for Scariff

Scariff 2-12   Tubber 2-11

Leading 2-5 to 0-1 after just 20 minutes, it seemed inevitable that Tubber would coast to a comfortable win over Scariff in Gurteen last Sunday.
That certainty soon evaporated as Scariff reeled in their opponents and fashioned a thrilling win. Ross Horan scored 2-7 of Scariff’s total, with both goals coming in the second half. Another significant contributing factor to their win was the display of Cathal Nash, when he was moved to centre back. Scariff’s defensive unit tightened up and was crucial in fashioning the win. Scariff now play Whitegate in a game that will decide who will have to play a relegation semi-final, while Tubber must beat Inagh–Kilnamona if they are to make the quarter-final of the senior championship.
Eamon Taaffe scored the first of Tubber’s two goals when he found the net after Shane O’Connor had delivered a high ball, from which Taaffe picked up the break.
Darragh O’Connor scored Tubber’s second goal in the 17th minute, while Ross Horan was the sole Scariff man to score in that opening period.
Come the interval, Horan, Alfie Rogers twice and Cathal Nash had increased Scariff’s total, though they still trailed 2-6 to 0-5 at half-time.
Horan scored 1-2 on the resumption with Mark Early and Darragh O’Connor replying of Tubber, leaving them leading 2-8 to 1-7.
The game turned midway through the second half when Horan added 1-1 inside two minutes, thereby tying the score at 2-8 each. Barry Murphy then pointed the winners a point ahead, with Kenny McNamara adding a like score. Clive Early and Shane O’Connor hit back soon after to tie the game at 2-10 apiece. Horan then tagged on two points, one from a free before Pat O’Connor responded with a point from play a minute into injury time.
Three minutes later Blaine Early hit a 65’ wide and that sealed a superb win for Scariff, who trailed by ten points ten minutes before half time.
Scariff must now attempt to produce that form in their next game against Whitegate, while Tubber will have to examine how they collapsed and work on turning it around for their crunch game against Inagh-Kilnamona.
