Corofin Dramatic Society scooped three awards at the RTÉ All-Ireland Drama Festival 2013 at the weekend.
Maura Clancy won the national best actress award for the second year in-a-row, this time for her performance in By the Bog of Cats by Marina Carr. The society also won awards for best stage setting and best stage management.
John Clancy directed the play. He said the wins represent a win not just for individuals but for all members of the production.
“Maura is so consistent all year. She had won numerous awards in the qualifying competitions and did a great job on the night of the All-Ireland and anyone who saw her said she was in with a great chance of winning. We don’t know if this has happened before actually, where one actor has won two years in-a-row. Maura was the winner at last year’s festival for her performance in The Subject was Roses,” John explained.
While winning three national awards this year is an accomplishment, the society has set its sights higher.
“We didn’t come in the top three overall, so that was a bit disappointing, but each of the overall awards are for the whole group. This is our hobby and what we want to do but these awards help along the way.
“You like to know you are doing something right. I wouldn’t call winning these awards an inspiration, it is more a bonus. It is good and gives us confidence and let’s us know we are on the right track and if we work a bit harder, we might win it. That is our aim, to win it at some stage in the future and you like to think you are getting closer to that each year,” John concluded.
