Photograph by Declan MonaghanTHE yellow-brick road will be leading towards Glór this month where the Dinan School of Ballet will perform their annual show. This year’s show will be Over the Rainbow, a unique reworking of the classic The Wizard of Oz, taking place on Wednesday and Thursday at 7.30pm. The show will feature all pupils of the school, ranging in age from just three and a half to adults.
A variety of music and dance styles have been incorporated into the show, including ballet, tap, jazz and contemporary.
“This is our 24th annual show involving all of the students and there is huge excitement among everyone in the school in the lead up,” said Niamh Dinan.
“It’s fantastic because we have children as young as three and a half, who are just starting to dance and we also have the adults who had started to dance at that age taking part. The show really has something for everyone.
“Although the show is based on The Wizard of Oz, it’s our own unique take using dance and mime. The show will be really colourful. There are some fantastic costumes, which we all make ourselves. It’s a challenge each year to come up with new innovative ideas, and we decided to do this production because The Wizard of Oz has lots of scope to add plenty of variety. While there will be some of the songs from the classic film, there are also different songs used to incorporate the different dance styles.”
Rehearsals have been ongoing for the past eight weeks since the end of exams for the students and Niamh said audiences can expect an amazing show.
“The show is open to anyone to attend. Of course, we have the mammies, daddies and grannies but we have built up quite a following over the years. People know that we put on a slick and professional show. People come with that expectation and hopefully they won’t be disappointed,” she concluded.
