The road to Athlone


 

Over the past number of weeks, 169 young athletes from all corners of Clare have been busy preparing for the national Community Games finals, which will take place at Athlone IT over the weekend of August 15 to 17.

The competitors, in a variety of disciplines, will be attempting to maintain Clare’s great record at All-Ireland level.

An eight-person team (four boys and four girls) will compete in the U-16 marathon.

They are Caoimhe Harvey (Carrigaholt-Cross); Elaine Shannon (Ennistymon-Lahinch-Liscannor); Sharon Egan (Kilmihil); Grainne Kelly (Doora-Barefield); Sean Collins (Ennis St John’s); Eoin Looney (Miltown); Stephen Maher (Ballynacaly-Lissycasey) and Micheal Clancy (Doonbeg).

Ennis St John’s will represent Clare in the mixed U-10 relay and their team members are Naomi O’Shaughnessy, Jeremiah Iwalewa, Cian O’Boyle, Ciara Meehan, Efe Opuoro and Niamh Cassidy. Ennis St John’s also carry Clare hopes in the boys U-12 relay with Gabriel Kehinde, Tuynmise Badewa-Ekungba, Sultan Akinwale, Chibikem Okoye, Derick Sholarin, and David Onwudiwe.

They will also be Clare’s representatives in the girls U-14 relay with Elizabeth Adeysian, Katie O’Dwyer, Christina Njekwe, Siobhán McMahon, Mary Sobamiwa and Nadia Buczek. The Ennis club will also carry local hopes in the boys U-14 represented by Basit Bakare, Joshua Kogbodoku, Faruok Sobayo, Manus Doherty, Tonty Odubote and Darren O’Brien.

Ennis St John’s will also represent Clare in the U-16 relay with Jamie Roche, Kaderi Karimu, Mark and Sean Collins and Gavin Cooney.

Clarecastle-Ballyea represent Clare in the girls U-12 relay with Kate Murphy, Aoibhin Donnelly, Emma O’Brien, Rachel Hartigan and Emma O’Donoghue.

In the mixed U-13 Quin-Clooney’s Alex O’Neill, Ellie Rochford, Ulick O’Sullivan, Mark Coughlan, Oisin Egan and Sinead McGee will compete.

Doonbeg will represent the county in the mixed U-16 with Micheal Clancy, Keith Haugh, Cliodhna Blake and Aisling Kelly.

The following will represent Clare in the athletics events:
U-8, 60m: Ellen Mannion (Doora-Barefield) and Samuel Olaoye (Ennis St John’s). 80m: Ava Rochford and Donna Ogbuagu (Ennis St John’s).
U-10, 100m: Shaua O’Gorman Cooraclare-Cree, Efe Opuoro (St John’s).
200m: Ciadh Reynolds (Inch-Connolly-Kilmaley); Cian O’Boyle (Ennis St John’s). 60m hurdles: Ciara Meehan (Ennis St John’s); Noah McConway (Quin-Clooney).
U-12, 100m: Niamh Conlon (Cooraclare-Cree); Gabriel Kehinde (Ennis). 600m: Susan Nestor (Carrigaholt-Cree); Shane Harrisson (Quin Clooney). Ball throw: Orla O’Brien (Tulla); Blake Curran (Shannon).
U-14, 100m: Emily Barry (Carecastle-Ballyea); Tony Odubote (Ennis St John’s). 800m: Alex O’Neill (Quin-Clooney); Sean Cahill (Tulla). 80m hurdles: Laura McDonnell (Doora-Barefield); Basit Bakare (Ennis St John’s). Long puck: Alannah Ryan (Kilkishen- O’Callaghan’s Mills); Shane Kenny (Doora-Barefield). Shot putt: Laura Greene (Doonbeg); Kevin Caulfield (Tulla). Long jump: Ellie Rochford (Quin-Clooney); Luke Callinan (Killimer-Knockerra).
U-16, 100m:
Lucy Cotgreave (Newmarket); Cathal O’Brien (Doora-Barefield). 1,500m: Aisling Kelly (Doonbeg); Kevin Mulcaire (Clarecastle-Ballyea). High jump: Cliodhna Blake (Doonbeg); Barry Loughnane (Quin-Clooney). Discus: Angharad Loughnane (Kilkishen-O’Callaghan’s Mills); Fergal Coghlan (Quin-Clooney). Javelin: Grace Moloney (Tulla); Gearóid McMahon (Newmarket). Triple jump: Kate Taylor (Quin-Clooney); Kaderi Karimu (Ennis St John’s).
