ENNIS Musical Society is proud to present its latest musical challenge as they bring their production of Hot Mikado to Glór this March.
This musical comedy is based on Gilbert and Sullivan’s The Mikado, adapted by David H Bell and Rob Bowman but having researched the 1939 Broadway musical, The Hot Mikado, Bell and Bowman created a new adaptation, Hot Mikado. EMS will be bringing their own interpretation and production of this adaptation to the Glor stage for five shows running from March 10 to 13.
Speaking to The Clare Champion, Ennis Musical Society’s chairperson Jonathon Hopper said, “We are very excited to announce that our show for the 2010 season will be Hot Mikado. We appreciate that it is an ambitious show for an amateur society but we have an outstandingly talented bunch of people working three nights a week to ensure the show will be as successful as our previous productions,” he said.
This 1986 update of the Gilbert and Sullivan classic keeps the original plot but has the extra bonus of additional laughs. The score uses much of Sullivan’s original music but is re-orchestrated using 1940s’ popular musical harmonies and arrangements and a wide range of styles, including jazz, hot gospel, blues and rock.
The cast is supported by 30 members of the chorus and top performances come from Cleopatra Meany as Katisha, Brian Henry as Ko-Ko, Mary Healy as Pitti-Sing, Kate Corrigan as Peep-Bo, Cormac O’Sullivan as The Mikado, Michael O’Gorman as Nanki-Poo, Jamie Sheehan as Pish-Tush, Mark May as Pooh-Bah and Nicola Cusack as Yum-Yum.
