Seven more Covid-19 cases were confirmed in Clare, bringing the number of positive cases so far to 113. Thirty eight more people diagnosed with the virus have died bringing the total number of deaths in Ireland to 444. Of the latest deaths, 29 occurred in the east of the country, six in the west and three in the south. The median age of today’s reported deaths is 84 and 28 people were reported as having underlying health conditions. An additional 1,068 new cases were diagnosed as of 1pm today with 657 new confirmed cases reported by Irish laboratories and 411 by a laboratory in Germany. With the latest figures from Germany included, there are now a total of 12,547 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Ireland. The HSE is working to identify any contacts the patients may have had to provide them with information and advice to prevent further spread. The number of positive Covid-19 cases in Clare has risen by a further ten and now stands at 98 cases in total. The Health Protection Surveillance Centre has today been informed that 31 people diagnosed with Covid-19 in Ireland have died. Of these, 26 deaths were located in the east, three in the north west, one in the south and one in the west. The deaths included 18 females and 13 males and 25 people were reported as having underlying health conditions. Tthe median age of today’s reported deaths is 82. There have now been 365 Covid-19 related deaths in Ireland and a summary of all 365 deaths provided by the HPSC shows that  215 (59%) of those who died were male, 150 (41%) were female, the median age of those who died is 82 and 247 of these cases were admitted to hospital with 37 admitted to ICU. As of midnight on Saturday, Clare citizens have effectively been ordered to stay indoors except for a few clearly identified circumstances. The announcement was made during a televised address from Taoiseach, Leo Varadkar. All public and private gatherings outside of a single household are also prohibited in the most stringent attempt so far to deal with the Corona virus. People will be allowed to leave their homes to travel to essential work, to travel to medical appointments, to shop for food or medical necessities or for vital family reasons, for example providing care to a vulnerable person. Exercise can be taken outdoors but only singly and within 2km of your home. Non essential shops and services will close and all non-essential surgery will be postponed. A ban on visiting hospitals and other health facilities is in place except on compassionate grounds. By Fiona McGarry A SOUTH-East Clare woman, living in Northern Italy, has pleaded with the Irish people to take Government guidelines on social distancing seriously in order to contain the spread of Covid-19. Rachel Turner, originally from Bridgetown, has been living in Milan for more than a decade and said people here should be taking every possible precaution to avoid contracting and spreading the coronavirus. As the death toll in Italy surpasses that of China, Rachel told The Clare Champion the mood is very low and people are desperately missing their normal lifestyles, after more than a month of severe restrictions on movement. THERE is shock around Clare this afternoon as Taoiseach Leo Varadkar has announced a range of new measures to try and halt the spread of Covid 19. In a statement in Washington today the Taoiseach said that schools, colleges and childcare facilities will close, while he advised that indoor mass gatherings of more than 100 people and outdoor gatherings of more than 500 be cancelled. Explaining how serious the situation is, the Taoiseach said, “Yesterday, the World Health Organisation formally described it as pandemic and the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) updated it guidelines advising us all to act early to be effective. “Our own National Public Health Emergency Team met last night and has issued new advice to Government.
