The Mid-West’s reputation as a leading technology hub will be enhanced by the inclusion of UL’s Lero research centre in a €245m funding plan up to 2020, according to Minister for Education and Skills, Jan O’Sullivan. The fund, which is backed by €155m in government investment and €90m from industry sources, is focused on five world class research centres in Limerick, Galway and Dublin. “I am delighted that Lero will benefit from this funding. More than 2,500 international students, representing over 100 countries, are attending the University of Limerick this year, providing a €19 million boost to the Mid-West. This figure figure is based on student spending estimates of between €7,000 and €12,000 in one year and does not include tuition fees paid to the university. Undergraduates at UL this year include 150 Brazilian students taking part in the Science without Borders programme. THE  intriguing history of Scattery Island and Kililmer – Tarbert,  can be appreciated in a new photographic exhibition launched at the University of Limerick  by UL president, Professor Don Barry. The exhibition entitled ‘Inhabiting the Shannon Estuary: Scattery Island and Kilimer-Tarbert’ was developed from the activities of the Scattery Island Heritage and Tourism Forum which ran and won the ‘Community Gathering of the Year’ award from Chambers Ireland for their Island Gathering in July 2013. The Scattery Island exhibition was pieced together by the voluntary group whose long term aim is to preserve the physical and built environment on the island, working with the Office of Public Works and Clare County Council. The photographs are drawn from the Limerick City Museum Collection, the National Monuments Service, the Lawrence Collection in the National Library of Ireland and personal perspectives provided by the Forum members.
