Trump to alter name of Doonbeg business

TRUMP International in Doonbeg is set for a slight adjustment to it’s name, former US President Donald Trump told the press this afternoon. After completing 18 holes at his course, Trump spoke to reporters from a golf buggy and said he wants its new title to reflect its location. “I said to myself it’s on the Ocean, we’ll go with Doonbeg on the Ocean.” Trump added, “It’s not a new name but we’re adding the word ocean. I said to myself it’s on the ocean, if it’s on the ocean we’ll go with Doonbeg on the Ocean, we’ve got the ocean and nobody else does. So that’s what we’re calling it.” He said that the Trump name will remain and it will be referred to as Trump Doonbeg on the Ocean. Asked what he had shot on the course, Trump joked that it might have been a 72, meaning he would have gone round the challenging course at even par. …

Trump arrives in Clare

FORMER US President Donald Trump has arrived in Clare. While he was expected at Shannon Airport between 3pm and 5pm this afternoon, it was around 6.30pm when his aircraft touched down. He later left Shannon for Doonbeg in a motorcade consisting of approximately 20 vehicles, while a helicopter kept watch overhead. Neither Shannon nor Doonbeg saw protests of any note this evening and in fact there were a small number of Trump supporters in both areas. One woman brandishing a Trump banner outside Shannon Airport as his motorcade passed said she was thrilled to have come so close to him. “I’m absolutely delighted. I came down from Ballinrobe in Mayo, I brought the kids down, it’s a once in a lifetime experience and I wanted them to see it and feel it.” She claimed that Trump was the winner of the last US Presidential election. “Trump’s amazing isn’t he? He’s the one. Trump won!” Mr Trump is being accompanied by …

“I loved the airport, loved my job and I’d do it all again’

NIALL has left the building. After 41 years at Shannon Airport, many of them as its operations director, Niall Maloney has now retired. Always hugely enthusiastic about his work and the success of Shannon, this week he said he had really enjoyed his career. “It has been a wonderful experience. Would I want to do it again? I’d absolutely do it again. I loved the airport, loved my job, but I knew it was time to move on. It’s about energy, about new thought processes. I really wish Niall Kerins well as the new director.” Shannon airport has been at the heart of the Maloney family, with Niall’s father working there before him, having been headhunted by Dr Brendan O’Regan in the early 1950s. Niall’s own career started there in the early 1980s. “I was very fortunate that I got a temporary job in the airport in 1981. I thought I was going to be there for six months but …

€4.5m wage spend at Trump International despite pandemic

TRUMP International spent just under €4.5 million on wages and salaries in 2021, newly filed accounts show. While the company was one of West Clare’s largest employers with an average of 230 staf in 2019, this dipped to 112 in the first year of the pandemic, before coming back up to 137 last year. The amount spent on wages increased by €1.27 million in 2021 compared to the previous year. Trump International made an operating profit of €509,892 for the year, rebounding from an operating loss of almost €2 million in 2020. However, despite the operating profit, its net assets declined by over €1 million, largely due to depreciation and amortisation of €2.054 million. During the year the company received €1.85 million in government grants. While 2021 was a difficult year because of Covid restrictions, a note accompanying the accounts said Trump International had performed quite well in the circumstances. “While the hotel had to close to the public for …

Trump visit to Doonbeg cancelled

GARDAI have confirmed that Donald Trump will not be coming to Clare next week, as had been expected. It is understood that preliminary preparations had been made for his visit, but it was confirmed this morning that it will now not be going ahead. While there had been few signs of any security activity in Doonbeg, Gardai had been on the brink of making more concrete preparations for Trump’s arrival. Trump had been expected to visit Doonbeg along with Greg Norman, who designed the course is now CEO of LIV Golf, ahead of a possible LIV tournament at Doonbeg. Mr Trump has not been to Doonbeg since he stayed there in 2019, during his Presidency. Indeed he has actually not left America since his time in the White House ended, and earlier this week he accused the FBI of taking passports belonging to him as its agents executed a search warrant at his Mar-a-Lago home recently.

Smaller security operation expected for 2022 Trump visit

THREE years ago the arrival of Donald Trump saw one of the most extensive security operations in Clare’s history, and he is due to visit his property in Doonbeg again this month. In 2019 Gardai from around the country spent a few days in Clare for the visit, but sources this week say that the operation this time will be far less significant. Last week it was said that Garda preparations on the ground around Shannon Airport had not begun, as full details of the Trump visit were not available. However, local Gardai expect that the vast majority of the Gardai involved in security this time will be drawn from the Clare division, with perhaps a small bit of assistance from neighbouring areas. Even if it were required, Gardai say that bringing in members of the force from other parts of the country would be far more difficult now, with many hotels in the region already fully occupied due to …

Sales for the year were down by over €8 million, from just shy of €12 million in 2019 to €3.763 million last year. Fake news shows why Clare must support Shannon-opinion

WHOEVER was left in charge of the Dublin Airport Twitter account last week may have done Shannon an entirely unintended favour. Many thousands of people in Clare and indeed Limerick feel strongly about the success of the airport upon which the region’s economy depends and when Dublin Airport posted a ridiculous, self-regarding tweet about being the key gateway for the 2026 Ryder Cup in Adare, it really jarred. It has helped bring attention to the plight of our struggling airport and the fallout will show local politicians that they must take action to arrest its decline. The term fake news is derided because Donald Trump coined it and has aimed it at some of the most reputable media organisations in the world. Yet the depressing reality is that fake news is often widely believed nowadays, with ease of access to publication through social media and weak deterrents meaning that people are merrily spreading lies all around the world, every single …
