AN Ennis hotel is to open its doors next week to support efforts to fight Covid-19, by facilitating a three-week blood donation clinic. Because of the lock-down, the Irish Blood Transfusion Services Board (IBTS), has had to introduce an appointments-only system for Clare donors. It will also apply strict social distancing protocols at the clinics which will operate at Treacy’s West County Hotel, from Tuesday next (April 14) until Thursday, April 30. “At the moment, blood stocks are fine as demand is down due to the cancellation of elective hospital procedures,” explained Aileen Browne, Area Manager for IBTS. “However, we do need to ensure we are prepared for any increase. Donations are essential, so people will be permitted to travel to give blood. Almost 700 delegates, observers and visitors from across the island of Ireland are in Ennis this week for the Irish Congess of Trade Unions’ Biennial Delegate Conference (BDC). Congress represents some 750,000 workers north and south of the border and is the largest civil society body on the island of Ireland. The 2015 conference theme is ‘Living Wage, Strong Economy’ and over the course of July 7-9 delegates will debate key motions on pay, the economy, low hour contracts, publics services and the proposed TTIP trade deal BDC 2015 at Treacys West County Hotel will also hear from a number of high-profile speakers, including Tanaiste Joan Burton; Bernadette Segol, the head of the European Trade Union Confederation, Sharan Burrow of the International Trade Union Confederation and Palestinian diplomat Ali Safieh. The forcus of debate in Tuesday’s opening session was pay and economy, with debate turning to Northern Ireland in the afterrnoon. Minister for Education in Northern Ireland, John O Dowd is to address the INTO conference in Ennis in April, is has been confirmed. He will speak on Tuesday, April 7 following the address of the Minister for Education and Skills Jan O’Sullivan. The INTO general secretary, Sheila Nunan will respond to both ministers on behalf of approximately 850 delegates, representing 33,000 primary teachers in the south and 7,000 teachers in the north, at Treacys West County Hotel. The Conference will be addressed at its opening session on the previous day by INTO president, Sean McMahon from Mullagh and and Tom Healy, director of the Nevin Economic Research Institute (NERI). Tom has previously worked in the Economic and Social Research Institute, the Northern Ireland Economic Research Centre, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development, the National Economic and Social Forum and the Department of Education and Skills.

Up to 800 people from all over the island of Ireland will gather in Ennis next week for the 2014 IPB Pride of Place Awards. This year’s ceremony takes place on Saturday, November 15 at Treacy’s West County Hotel and is being hosted by Clare County Council and Cooperation Ireland, which runs the competition north and south of the border. IPB Pride of Place, which was first piloted in the summer of 2003 and came from the Local Authority All-Island Steering Forum, aims to recognise and celebrate the vital contributions that communities make to society. Clare is being represented in this year’s competition by Lisdoonvarna Fáilte Ltd. in Category 3 for population centres of between 750 and 1,500 people, Clarecastle Community Development Ltd. in Category 4 for population centres of between 1,500 and 4,000 people, Tuamgraney Community Woodland in Category 6 (Eco Community Initiative), and Clarisford Ltd.
