ALMOST €3 million in roads funding has been allocated to Clare for the coming year, Fine Gael TD Joe Carey has confirmed. Deputy Carey said that €2,932, 040  has been made available to Clare County Council to upgrade and maintain the county’s roads network as a result of funding secured in Budget 2020. “The allocation, which has been confirmed by Transport Infrastructure Ireland, includes €1 million for the provision of a pavement linking Lissycasey to Caherea. “I am also delighted that €350,000 has been set aside for work at Blake’s Corner in Ennistymon and €250,000 for the N19 Shannon Airport access road,” he added.

MEMBERS of Clare County Council have questioned plans for a new online motorway service area, claiming it could have a negative impact on businesses in Newmarket and Shannon. A letter presented to this week’s meeting of Shannon Municipal District from Halcrow Barry stated, “Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) is promoting a scheme to provide online motorway service areas at specific locations across the Irish motorway network. Halcrow Barry is the appointed consultant engaged by the TII to carry out the site selection process and design of the scheme. “We previously presented to the Shannon Municipal District in November 2015, regarding the site selection process for an online motorway service area on the M18 between Junction 7 (Hurler’s Cross Sixmilebridge) and Junction 12 (Ennis). “The site selection study is now complete and the preferred site has been identified as Site 1E. Site 1E is situated on the eastern side of the M18 in the townlands of Ballyconneely and Ballynacraffa, approximately 1.5km north-west …

Clare County Council has sufficient supplies of rock salt to treat the county’s regional and national roads over the winter months. The local authority’s depot/maintenance facility at Beechpark, has 1,600 tonnes of rock salt, which the council notes is sufficient to facilitate up to 30 applications on the county’s strategic road network. Salt stocks will also be drawn down by the council during the winter from Transport Infrastructure Ireland (formerly the NRA) and the Department of Transport. Further stocks will be available if required in an emergency situation from TII’s strategic salt reserve.
