The Army is this morning (Wednesday) helping in the flood defence efforts in the Springfield area of Clonlara. This follows a dramatic rise in water levels on Tuesday evening in the Lower River Shannon south of Parteen Weir, resulting in the encroachment of floodwaters on a small number of properties in Springfield. A number of roads are now impassable in the area including the main road from Mount Catherine (De Courcy) Bridge to Cottage Cross. Several properties have been isolated as a result and the affected homeowners will be assisted with access to and from their properties by Clare Fire and Rescue Service and Clare Civil Defence. Clare County Council will be liaising with the ESB, An Garda Síochána and local property owners throughout today. The council anticipates that water levels will rise further during the day and is monitoring and evaluating the situation on an ongoing basis.
