Shannon Family Resource Centre offering new services

THE Shannon Family Resource Centre (Shannon FRC) is now offering a discreet family-support service and has secured additional funding for one to one counselling for children and adults which is being delivered free of charge. The new Shannon FRC website showcases this and other positive mental health services and resources which are available in the Shannon area. “Child and adolescent counselling services have seen a big increase in demand since the pandemic began,” says Colette Bradley, co-ordinator of Shannon FRC. Like many other organisations, Shannon FRC, based in the Rineanna View Community Building, has been learning to adapt to new ways of supporting the people of the town and surrounding communities as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. Two men arrested in connection with Sixmilebridge shooting incident

GARDAÍ at Shannon investigating the shooting incident in Sixmilebridge village on Saturday, January 18, 2020, when two men suffered gunshot wounds have arrested two men in relation to their investigation. The incident occurred on Pound Street in the village during the Shannonside Music Festival. Two men, one aged 21, and the other a 66-year-old man suffered gunshot wounds during the incident. One man (20s) was arrest in Dublin on Thursday, February 25 and is being detained under Section 50 of the Criminal Justice Act, 2007 at Shannon Garda station. The second man (20s), was arrested in Limerick yesterday morning, Saturday, February 27,  and is being detained under Section 42 of the Criminal Justice Act, 1999 at Ennis Garda station. This brings to six the number of people arrested as part of this investigation. Gardaí say their Investigations are ongoing.

US military enter country at Shannon without Covid tests

PASSENGERS on a US military flight were allowed to enter Ireland at Shannon Airport despite not having been tested for Covid, the Dáil has heard. In response to the breach gardai instructed the passengers to isolate in a Limerick hotel, which they did – not without leaving their quarantine to obtain food however. Speaking in the Dáil, following a question from Social Democrats TD Cian O’Callaghan, Minister Simon Coveney said, “The landing in question was by a US military aircraft, with five crew and 48 passengers on board. “It had sought and received prior diplomatic clearance to land subject to our routine stipulations, including that it did not carry arms or ammunition. The US authorities have confirmed that this condition was met.” The Minister added, “As regards public health measures, Statutory Instrument 11/2021 was the applicable regulation on that date, which stipulated that all passengers should present negative PCR tests on arrival and complete a passenger location form. “Due to …

Market Shannon and look to develop cargo hub, say Council

ACTIVITY has almost stopped at Shannon Airport nowadays, but Clare County Councillors want it to be primed for whenever recovery is possible. At Monday’s meeting of the local authority Fine Gael’s John Crowe and Fianna Fáil’s Pat McMahon, both representatives of the Shannon Municipal District, put forward motions aimed at helping the airport, which is so important to the county’s economy. Councillor Crowe proposed that with Brexit having happened “it is now the time to develop Shannon as a leading European International Cargo Hub.” He welcomed talks between Amazon and Shannon Group and said that the tech giant’s invesmtnet could give the region “a huge boost in difficult times.” Councillor Crowe said that a huge amount of products go from Ireland to Heathrow by truck, before being flown from there, but Shannon has important advantages like an exceptionally long runway and plenty of nearby land which can be developed for cargo facilities. DB Schenker start €10 million Shannon development

LOGISTICS company DB Schenker have started a new €10 million development at Shannon Free Zone East. It is taking place on a 5.2 acre site owned by Shannon Commercial Properties, and the facility will be 52,000 square feet in size, to support their multi national customer base. DB Schenker, who already have an operation at Smithstown, have secured a 5.2-acre site for the project from Shannon Commercial Properties, a Shannon Group company. Congratulating DB Schenker, the latest company to establish a base at Shannon Free Zone, Mary Considine, CEO, Shannon Group said: “It is really encouraging to see a major development of this scale and we are proud to have played our part in facilitating DB Schenker’s €10 million investment on our development land at Shannon Free Zone East. Calls for bike sharing scheme roll-out in Clare

SHARED bike schemes for a number of Clare towns were mooted at an online Active Travel briefing last week. The event which was attended by an expert panel, including Transport Minister Éamon Ryan, heard calls for a Dublin-based scheme whereby bikes are available for short-term rental at a variety of locations, to be rolled out outside of the capital. “The Dublin Bike Scheme is great, is there any chance of that being rolled out in towns?” Green Senator, Róisín Garvey, who organised the online event, asked. “Is it a private enterprise, because it would work in Shannon, it would work in Ennis and in Kilrush, maybe. People have been talking a lot about this.” The minister noted the popularity of the scheme as well as some pitfalls. “I think we could and should [extend it],” he said. “It is a private scheme. Amazon to have Shannon presence?

REPORTS on Monday of talks between Shannon Group and Amazon caused some excitement locally, and while it is understood that there have indeed been discussion, no decision to go ahead with such a development is expected in the very near future. However, on Monday a spokesperson for Shannon Group acknowledged that there are plans for a new landside/airside cargo facility to be sited at the airport. “Shannon Group is uniquely positioned in that it has a significant supply of landside/airside development sites suitable for distribution of goods by both air and road. Shannon Group has delivered 1 million sq ft of new and refurbished aviation, office and manufacturing property solutions in the last five years and attracted new tenants such as Jaguar Land Rover, Edward Lifesciences and MeiraGTx to the Shannon Free Zone. Shannon woman gives back to UMHL

WITH her twin boys safely home now, Claire Louise Lagan is very grateful for everything that was done for her at the Maternity Hospital in Limerick and she has now organised a GoFundMe in aid of the NeoNatal Trust Fund. Earlier this month Claire Louise gave birth to twins Jai and Hunter, who arrived into the world a small bit earlier than had been expected. “They were five weeks premature so they needed to go into incubators for a couple of days, one got out before the other, and then they had to be feeding properly before they went home, so that was the main problem, they needed to be fed with tubes for more than a week.” Because she was having twins, Claire Louise had to have appointments every fortnight throughout her pregnancy and she is very grateful for all the care she received there. “The Maternity over the last nine months has been amazing, so that’s why I …
