St.Josephs, Doora-Barefield have regained their senior hurling status thanks to a merited five point win over hot favourites Broadford in the intermediate hurling championship final at Cusack Park this afternoon. Beaten in the final last year and unbeaten this season, Broadford went into this final as warm favourites but they never matched the hunger and commitment of the Doora-Barefield men who emerged 1-12 to 0-10 winners. The first half was an evenly fought affair at the end of which Broadford led by the odd point in thirteen (0-7 to 0-6). St. Josephs followers were angry just before the half time whistle when referee Johnnie Healy disallowed an Alan O’Neill goal from a penalty, penalising the St. Josephs player for being inside the 20m line when he struck the ball. The Clare senior football champions of the past two years, Miltown St. Josephs who are the current title holders and Cratloe, will meet in the 2016 semi-final. They were the first two teams drawn when the semi-final draw took place at Clare GAA headquarters on Monday evening. This means that the other semi-final willsee last year’s finalists, Cooraclare, take on either Kilmurry-Ibrickane or Lissycasey whose quarter final tie scheduled for Saturday last was cancelled due to the search for missing Lissycasey man David McMahon. The semi-finals are set to be played on Saturday and Sunday week. Meanwhile, the pairings for the quarter finals of the junior A football championship were also decided and they are Kilmurry-Ibrickane v Killimer, Naomh Eoin v Ballyvaughan, Michael Cusacks v Cooraclare and Clooney-Quin v Meelick. Shock results continued in the Clare senior hurling championship this Saturday afternoon as Tulla secured a quarter final spot while both Inagh-Kilnamona and Whitegate secured their senior status for next season when they overcame Newmarket and Kilmaley respectively. All three winners went into their games this Saturday afternoon as underdogs. Having two players sent off and the loss of a further two to injury proved too much for a fancied OCallaghans Mills who had to give best to their neighbours Tulla at Cusack Park. Tulla had a dream start with a superb goal from Darragh Corry in the opening minute but a like score from Michael McGrath in the eighth minute had the Mills in front and they went on to open a three point gap by the end of the opening quarter. Two senior quarter finalists, two intermediate semi-finalists, one junior A quarter finalist and a junior B finalist in the football championships have all been confirmed after this Saturday’s action. Cooraclare and Lissycasey advanced to the last eight in the race for the Jack Daly cup (senior championship) where they join Cratloe, Doonbeg, Kilmurry-Ibrickane and title holders Miltown St. Josephs who had secured their last eight places two weeks ago. the remaining two quarter finalists will be decided this Sunday Lissycasey overcame the disadvantage of being a player short for the second half which they dominated against O’Curry’s at Cooraclare. Ahead by 1-4 to 0-4 at half time, the goal coming from Cathal Doohan, they dominated the second half when they outscored their opponents, 0-10 to 0-1 to reverse the result from the same stage last year when O’Currys were one point winners. The draw for round 3 of the senior hurling championship has thrown up some very interesting pairings as has the senior relegation play off draw. Title holders Sixmilebridge will take on Wolfe Tones who made Crusheen battle all the way at the weekend in round two. There will be an East Clare battle as O’Callaghans Mills face neighbours Tulla while Clarecastle will need to step up on their form last week if they are to overcome a fancied Cratloe side. In the remaining third round tie Clooney-Quin will face Ballyea and this should prove an interesting fixture for Clarecastle man Fergie O’Loughlin. He is currently coaching Clooney-Quin having been in charge of Ballyea in the past. There were no major shocks as round 2 of the Clare senior hurling championship was completed this Sunday afternoon. Weather conditions were anything but pleasant as the remaining three games in the round were played at Sixmilebridge, Broadford and Tulla. Clonlara secured their passage to the quarter finals with a hard earned 2-13 to 1-11 win over Clooney-Quin at O’Garney Park. They got off to a superb start with a goal from Darach Honan in the second minute and the inter county man quickly followed with a point. By the end of the first quarter Clooney-Quin were in front helped by a Mike Daffy goal. A superb goal from Nicky O’Connell put the winners back in front and when the half time whistle sounded they were 2-2 to 1-4 ahead. When the draw for this year’s Clare senior hurling chamionship was made six months ago not many would have predicted that as early as round two, Kilmaley, Newmarket and Inagh-Kilnamona would be facing into the relegation play offs. After two rounds, thats exactly the position with all three out of the championship race having suffered their second defeats of the campaign this Saturday afternoon. Kilmaley, beaten semi-finalists after a replay with Clonlara last year, went under to Sixmilebridge at Shannon where the final score was 3-11 to 1-12. The Bridge led 1-7 to 0-6 at half time. Kilmaley made the better start to the second half with three unanswered points and at the three quarter stage the margin was down to two.. Kilmaley missed two scoreable frees and failed to capitalise on a goal scoring chance. Sixmilebridge then went on the attack and substitute Danny Morey found the net to put them five points clear. A repeat of last year’s Clare senior football final between Miltown St Josephs (winners) and Cooraclare is one of the attractions in the second round of the Clare senior football championship. The draw for both the winners and losers sections was made at a meeting of the CCC this Monday evening but dates have yet to be set and will be influenced by inter county fixtures involving the county senior hurlers and footballers who are in qualifier action over the next two weekends. West Clare neighbours Doonbeg and St.Senans, Kilkee should prove another interesting tie along with the meeting of Lissycasey and Cratloe.
