AN Outbreak Control Team has been established at University Hospital Limerick after one patient and one member of staff on Ward 3B tested positive for Covid-19 this Tuesday ( August 19). Contact tracing and testing is currently underway and all appropriate infection prevention and control measures are being followed in line with the national HPSC guidance. A number of staff from the ward at the centre of what we believe to be a localised outbreak have been identified as contacts. They have been asked to stay off work and to self-isolate in line with national guidance.  Initial testing of all patient contacts is complete and has not identified further cases. Clare has gone 27 days without a positive Covid-19 case. The total number of positive cases in the county remains at 368. Nationwide there was no new Covid-19 deaths reported to the Health Protection Surveillance Centre but the total number of people to have lost their lives from the virus stands at 1,738. As of midnight Tuesday, the HPSC has been notified of 11 confirmed cases of Covid-19. There is now a total of 25,542 confirmed cases in Ireland. Dr Ronan Glynn, Acting Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said; “A key element of our response to COVID-19 is ensuring that any person experiencing symptoms such ascough, shortness of breath, fever, loss of sense of smell or taste comes forward for testing. Please do not adopt a ‘wait-and-see’ approach, instead isolate yourself and contact your GP without delay.” The National Public Health Emergency Team meets again Thursday to continue its review of Ireland’s response and preparedness to Covidd-19.”

However over the last five months, 32 people have died from virus in the county while a total of 368 people have tested positive. The number of patients in Clare who have tested positive for coronavirus has risen to 54, up four in the past 24 hours, according to figures released by the Health Protection Surveillance Centre this afternoon. Seventeen patients diagnosed with Covid-19 have also died in that time frame bringing the total number of deaths in the country to 137. Of the 17 new deaths, 15 were located in the east, one in the south and one in the west. The patients included four females and 13 males and 13 were reported as having underlying health conditions. There have now been 137 Covid-19 related deaths in Ireland and the median age of the deceased is 81. There were also 331 new confirmed cases in the country and there are now 4,604 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Ireland.
