Marty’s mum driving to ‘safety of her son’ when she died in crash

Ninety-four-year-old Peggy Morrissey died after her car crashed into a field “on a very bad night storm-wise” while she was en route to the safety of her son, RTE broadcaster, Marty Morrissey, an inquest has heard. At the County Clare Coroner’s court in Kilrush, Marty Morrissey stated that he agreed with his mother, Peggy that she would stay with him at the Old Ground hotel in Ennis on the night of December 6 last year as Storm Barra was due to hit the west coast of Clare the following day. In a deposition, Mr Morrissey told the coroner’s court that he last spoke to Peggy at 11.36pm on December 6 by phone before she set off in her Silver Renault Clio and the two arranged that they would meet at the village of Inagh before journeying onto Ennis. Heartbroken Marty Morrissey thanks public for ‘wonderful love and support’

CLARE broadcaster Marty Morrissey has thanked the public for their “wonderful love and support” following his mother’s tragic passing earlier this month. Peggy Morrissey lost her life in a car accident at Annagh, Miltown Malbay in the early hours of Tuesday, December 7. Her only son Marty took to social media on Christmas Eve to pay tribute to all of those who have offered him support during what he described as “the most difficult” time of his life. The RTÉ sports commentator wrote, “The last few weeks has been the most difficult in my life as I lost my beautiful Mom so heartbreakingly. But my grief has been comforted by your wonderful love and support. “It’s a particularly hard time for a lot of people especially this year more than most. Life is precious. Marty’s emotional tribute to ‘greatest Irish mother’

BROADCASTER Marty Morrissey remembered his beloved mother Peggy as “The greatest Irish mother in the history of motherhood” as she was laid to rest in Mullagh at the weekend. Mrs Morrissey passed away following a road accident last week in a moment her only son described as “the greatest tragedy of my life”. Mourners gathered on Sunday at St Mary’s Church in Mullagh to say their last goodbyes to the popular member of the local community. As well as family, neighbours and friends the funeral mass was attended by representatives from both Irish President Michael D Higgins as well as Taoiseach Micheál Martin. Family photos, rosary beads and her prayer book, red lipstick, drivers license, a Cork flag as well as the Statue of Liberty were among just some of the items placed at the altar as symbols of her life. Sadness at tragic loss of Marty Morrissey’s mother Peggy

A WEST Clare community was left in shock this week after a tragic car crash claimed the life of Peggy Morrissey, the mother of RTÉ sports commentator Marty Morrissey, writes Jessica Quinn. Tributes have been paid to Mrs Morrissey following her passing in the early hours of Tuesday morning in a single car collision at Annagh, Miltown Malbay. Mrs Morrissey, who was a popular member of the Mullagh community, was the sole occupant of the car. Fr Donagh O’Meara, Parish priest of St Mary’s Church in Mullagh described Mrs Morrissey as “a very giving woman. She gave enormously and was very kind to people.” Mrs Morrissey, who was in her 90s and originally from Cork, attended mass every day and will be “hugely missed” in the community, he said. “She was a fiercely independent woman and she lived right up the last.
