Niall O’Brien was ‘rogue’ who left family and friends ‘a treasury of love’, funeral hears

Talented sportsman Niall O’Brien, who died a week ago following an alleged assault in Greece, was remembered at his funeral mass Monday, as a “loyal, witty, warm, rogue” who left his family and friends with a “treasury of love”, reports David Raleigh. The 21-year old from Castletroy, Limerick, and Broadford, County Clare, was “at the centre of fun, having it, and creating it”, his aunt Pauline said. Several hundred mourners looked on in silence as Mr O’Brien’s coffin was shouldered into Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Milford, Limerick, draped in the jerseys of several sporting clubs for whom he played. Friends from school, college, and sports clubs, in Monaleen, Castletroy and Broadford performed guards of honour as the cortège travelled the short distance from Mr O’Brien’s home in Castletroy to the church. Suspect in Niall O’Brien death to appear before Greek judiciary

A MAN arrested in connection with the death of Broadford hurler Niall O’Brien, in Greece, is due to appear before a Greek judicial authority Thursday, to hear whether or not charges will be brought against him, writes David Raleigh. The 20-year-old Irish suspect, who was not known to Mr O’Brien, was arrested by police on the island of Ios, following Mr O’Brien’s death, last Monday. Mr O’Brien, 22, who was on holiday with a group of 20 friends, died from serious head injuries following an altercation with another man in the town of Chora, police said. “On 30 August, a 20-year-old Irish citizen was arrested by police in Ios because another Irish citizen, 22, died. He said they fought and he punched him and the other citizen fell on the street, and (he was taken) to the hospital and he died there,” said police spokeswoman. “He hit his head as he fell on the ground, he was taken to the …

Former hurler with Clare club dies in Greece accident

TRIBUTES have been paid to a Clare club hurler and much-loved son, who died while holidaying in Greece overnight, writes David Raleigh. The deceased, who was in his 20s was named locally as Niall O’Brien, died after being struck by a car on the island of Ios, it’s understood. Mr O’Brien had been a star player with Broadford GAA Club, and was on holiday with a group of 20 friends when the accident occurred. His body is to be taken to Athens for a post mortem, an informed source said. Police on Ios have been contacted for comment. Mr O’Brien, from Castletroy in Limerick, and who was a third year student at the University of Limerick, was also a valued member of Castletroy Golf Club. “Niall was a brilliant sportsman, he was a serious hurler, he was huge into golf and gaa, soccer, everything really,” said a source. “He was an unassuming lad, and he had recently recovered from a …
