No de-nine Limerick as champions floor Banner

Munster Senior Hurling Championship Round 1 Limerick 3-15 Clare 1-18 Early sunstroke for Clare after being blitzed by three final quarter Limerick goals in an unprecedented 12 point turnaround in Ennis, writes Eoin Brennan. In what seemed the real start of the summer amidst soaring temperatures in a capacity 20,055 Cusack Park, Clare seemed to be on track for a rousing opening derby victory when soaring nine clear by the turn of the final quarter. With talisman Tony Kelly also subsequently introduced, the script was written for an early statement of intent from the recently crowned National League champions. However, much like their flooring opening round reverse to a five goal Tipperary this time last year, Clare would be largely the architects of their own downfall as not only were they outscored by 3-6 to 0-3 in a war-weary finish but all three goals were emininently preventable. It makes their trip to Supervalu Páirc Uí Chaoimh next Sunday all the …

HURLING: An extra step too far for brilliant Banner

Munster Senior Hurling Championship Final Limerick 1-29 Clare 0-29 PRIDE definitely overruled disappointment as a gallant Clare left everything on the field in a titanic Munster Final bid that had to go all the way to extra-time before finally having to succumb to holders Limerick in FBD Semple Stadium Thurles, writes Eoin Brennan. Any questions surrounding Clare’s readiness to take on the three-in-a-row champions were quickly answered as Brian Lohan’s warriors not only went toe-to-toe with Limerick for the third successive outing but with a slice of luck might have even snuck a victory in normal time. True to character, the relentless effort and spirit never waned in extra-time but unfortunately the legs did somewhat as a warweary Clare were finally edged out coming down the final straight. For Clare to finish without four of their starting forwards inciting the god-like Tony Kelly, Shane O’Donnell and Peter Duggan left Clare rather light physically and experienced-wise in contrast to Limerick whose …

HURLING: Clare and Limerick tee up Munster Final rematch

Munster Senior Hurling Championship Round 4 Clare 0-24 Limerick 1-21 CLARE extended their unbeaten championship record against Limerick in Cusack Park to 32 years after sharing the spoils with the back-to-back All-Ireland champions in front of a capacity 18.129 attendance, reports Eoin Brennan. Following a remarkable opening to the Munster series, one perfect record simply had to fall amidst the ideal backdrop of an unprecedented atmosphere and occasion in Ennis but in the end, the Shannonside neighbours both satisfactorily maintained their unbeaten starts after Diarmaid Byrnes’ last gasp equalising free. Byrnes was unerring for the champions but captain Tony Kelly was outstanding for the home side after almost single-handedly taking the game to Limerick to rack up a whopping 16 points in the first 45 minutes of the tie. That included five points surrounding Limerick’s sole goal in the 15th minute when Kyle Hayes clinically finished an incisive Conor Boylan run and pass to the net as Kelly edged Clare …

HURLING: Unbeaten Banner quash the Rebel-ion

Munster Senior Hurling Championship Round 3 Clare 0-28 Cork 2-20 Clare’s 2021 revenge tour soared to new heights in FBD Semple Stadium on Sunday afternoon when producing another stirring championship display to hold off Cork on their way to protecting their perfect start, writes Eoin Brennan. Having been edged out by Tipperary and Cork to exit both the Munster and All-Ireland Championships respectively last year, the Banner lowered both decisively in the space of seven days to effectively secure a place in the All-Ireland series at a minimum. What was most impressive was Clare’s ability to demonstrate every facet of their character when first blitzing the Rebels to soar eleven points clear by the 28th minute before having to show their teeth when reduced to 14 men for the final 20 minutes to keep a resurgent Cork at arm’s length. There were so many heroes that it was difficult to single any out but the mastery of captain Tony Kelly, …

HURLING: Clare lead from gun to tape to stun Waterford in Munster Hurling Championship opener

Munster Senior Hurling Championship Quarter-Final Clare 1-22 Waterford 0-21 A FIRST Munster victory under Brian Lohan as Clare hit the ground running in this year’s championship to stun Waterford into submission in Semple Stadium, Thurles on Sunday afternoon, reports Eoin Brennan. Leading from start to finish, Clare should have eased to a much more convincing triumph after having almost 50 shots at the posts in a dominant display. However, digging out the result by whatever means possible was the most important aspect for a new-look Banner who got revenge for being knocked out of the All-Ireland series by the same opponents last September. As with every championship match in 2020, Clare kept their opponents defence on their toes with regards to the positioning of talisman Tony Kelly, with Lohan and Co. making the brave call of placing the current All-Star at the edge of the square for the entire 70 minutes. Without the target of Shane O’Donnell, it would prove …
