ON Tuesday of this week, as a result of routine operations, Revenue officers at Shannon Airport seized 4kgs of Kratom worth almost €81,000. The consignment originated from Luxembourg and was destined for an address in Mayo. Also on Tuesday, Revenue officers seized over 2kgs of herbal cannabis with an estimated value of €44,000 in Shannon Airport. The illegal drugs were discovered in four different packages in a freight consignment that originated in Milan, Italy. All packages were destined for an address in Galway. The seizures are part of Revenue’s ongoing work targeting the illegal importation of drugs and shadow economy activity. AN Ennis resident has won two international business awards for public relations and communications in Barcelona. Nicola Corless, originally from Mayo but who has been living in Ennis for the past 10 years is to receive a Gold and a Silver Stevie® Award at the 14th Annual International Business Awards, which will be held in Barcelona in October. The awards recognise her work within the Marketing and Communications Division of University of Limerick. UL was the outright winner in the Communications or PR Campaign of the Year – Global Issues category for which it will receive a Gold Stevie® Award. The university marketing and communications division also won a Silver Stevie® Award in the Communications or PR Campaign of the Year – Low Budget (Under $10,000 / € 7,000) category. Thousands of GAA fans travelling to Saturday’s All-Ireland Football qualifier in Cusack Park and Sunday’s Munster minor and senior Hurling Finals between Clare and Cork in Semple Stadium have been given a special ‘drive safely’ message. “We want people to drive safely this weekend. There will be a huge volume of traffic on the roads for the games, and we urge people to take care and to ensure that their trip to these great sporting occasions do not end in tragedy,” said Barry Keating, road safety officer, Clare County Council. He added, “We want all road users to change their behaviours and make these changes part of their lives in the future, which will save lives and reduce serious injuries on our roads.
