The Chambers of Ennis, Galway, Limerick and Shannon, which represent 1,355 members with a combined employment level of 45,700, have welcomed the recent signing into law of the Shannon Airport Bill. The Chambers’ concern about the length of time it has taken to complete this very necessary piece of legislation has been well documented but the presidents are now unanimous in their belief that a new dawn has finally arrived for Shannon Airport with new Shannon Group plc finally being in a position to bring their very ambitious plans for the airport to fruition. In a joint statement, the presidents said,”The ability of the new airport management teams now in place at the airport is clearly evident. A five-year decline in passenger numbers has already been reversed in its first year as an independent entity, and double-digit growth in passenger numbers is forecast for 2014. We can now confidently look forward to seeing further wins for the new strategic business units …

The total number of vacant commercial premises in Clare has increased from 11.2% in Q1 2013 to 12.2% in Q1 2014, according to the latest data published by GeoDirectory this Monday. For the first time, the report includes an analysis of the commercial vacancy rates of a selection of Ireland’s main shopping centres and high streets in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Kilkenny and Limerick. In Clare, 863 of the 7,062 commercial addresses recorded in Q1 2014 were vacant. This is a commercial vacancy rate of 12.2%.  This figure relates to premises in Ennis and all over the count. According to the latest edition of GeoView which is published quarterly, there are 223,336 commercial address points across the country, of which, 27,791 were classified as vacant. The national commercial vacancy rate in Q1 2014 is unchanged from the 12.4% reported in Q4 2013. Thirteen counties; Sligo, Leitrim, Galway, Dublin, Limerick, Roscommon, Waterford, Carlow, Donegal, Mayo, Laois, Longford and Offaly recorded commercial vacancy rates …

By Seamus Hayes Cathal O’Connell, one of the stars of Clare’s All-Ireland U-21 hurling win last year, has been ruled out of this Wednesday’s Munster championship first round clash with Limerick. The Clonlara clubman suffered a hamstring injury in a match involving panel members on Saturday. He joins Shane O’Donnell and Alan O’Neill, who were also key players in last season’s win, on the injured list. Ballyea’s Niall Deasy is another who has been ruled out with a hamstring injury. Jarlath Colleran has recovered form injury and is named at corner back. The team for Wednesday’s game was named after training on Monday evening and includes just five of last year’s team. Tony Kelly will captain the team from centre forward. By Owen Ryan GARDAI have arrested one man and are still seeking others following an incident in which three teenagers were robbed at knife point in Shannon last Saturday evening. On the evening in question at about 7.30pm seven teenagers were together in a wooded area of Drumgeely. They were approached by three males, all wearing hoodies with the hoods up. One of the group produced a knife and threats were made, before the group took sums of money consisting of €20 and €4 as well as a speaker for a phone which was valued at €60. The three hooded males ran off towards Corrib Drive after the incident. On the night Shannon Town were playing a soccer match against Moyross United and after the males suspected of being involved in the incident were seen getting onto a large coach that had brought people to the match, Gardai were alerted. Gardai brought all passengers off the bus and one person …

THE Ennis to Limerick railway line will reopen from the start of business on Tuesday morning The line had been closed since February 2, due to extensive flooding in the Ballycar area, with water levels peaking at almost two metres above the rail line. The closure was prolonged due to the slow draining nature of the karst landscape in the area. Bus transfers had been substituting the rail service throughout the closure. However, water levels have now receded and following a final inspection and test train this Monday, full services will resume on Tuesday for Ennis to Limerick services (including Sixmilebridge Station), and full Galway to Limerick services. As trains will once again be operating on the route, users of level crossings have been reminded by Iarnród Éireann to be vigilant and to use level crossings safely at all times.  

SHANNONWATCH, in conjunction with The Bottom Dog publication, is to host a public talk by peace activist, writer and actress, Margaretta D’Arcy next week. It will take place at the Mechanics Institute, Limerick n on Thursday next at 7pm. Margaretta served almost 10 weeks of a three month prison sentence for protesting the use of Shannon Airport by US military, and was only released on March 22. She will talk about her life of activism and the ongoing campaign to rid Shannon of the US military. Margaretta is a member of Aosdána and is well known for addressing issues relating to Irish nationalism, civil liberties and women’s rights in her work. In January of this year she was imprisoned for a September 2012 peace action on the runway at Shannon Airport, after she refused to sign an undertaking not to return to the restricted areas of the airport. CLARE will be well represented in a choir of over 450 secondary school students from the Killaloe and Limerick dioceses that will give great voice to the Limerick National City of Culture’s programme next Thursday with a first concert of its kind at University Concert Hall. The students from counties Clare, Limerick, Offaly and Tipperary will form the largest choir ever to perform at the University Concert Hall when they deliver their Seinn 2014 performance on  April 3. The event is unique, not just because of the massive size of the choir but because most of its members will be coming together for the first time ever that morning after rehearsing remotely in recent weeks. Lead vocalists and instrumentalists have, however, met up several times in the run-up to the performance. The show, which will feature contemporary music as well as a number of classic hymns, is part of Limerick Diocese’s programme of events to mark Limerick National City of …

SEVEN TDs are to attend a special meeting with Mid-West GPs in Limerick this evening to discuss the crisis in general practice. The meeting is scheduled for 7.30pm at the Strand Hotel. At a previous meeting in Cork over 250 GPs attended to pass on their message to members of the Oireachtas. Though the meeting is not open to the media, there will be a briefing beforehand on the concerns GPs have about the lack of resources being devoted to primary care and the impact this is having on patients. The meeting will be chaired by Dr Conor McGee, and speakers at the event include Dr Edward Walsh, founding president, Limerick University; along with GPs Mary Gray, Miriam Callanan, Emmet Kerin and Michael Harty.
