‘Champion looking for short stories

ENTRIES for The Clare Champion Short Story Competition 2016 are now being accepted. Second-level students are invited to submit between 1,000 and 1,500 words on any subject of their choice, with Leaving Cert and Junior Cert categories for the young writers. The first prize is €300, with €200 for the runner-up and €100 for third place in each category. There will also be a number of prizes for highly commended short stories. Prospective entrants should submit a typed-only entry with their name, age, telephone number, school, year and English teacher’s name to Second Level Schools Short Story Competition Category (Leaving Cert or Junior Cert), The Clare Champion, Barrack Street, Ennis. The deadline is February 19, 2016. Students’ Union offers advice on exam results

The Irish Second-Level Students’ Union has congratulated all 57,929 students who received their Leaving Certificate and Leaving Certificate Applied results today. Speaking this morning, ISSU President Rob O’Donnell said, “As a Leaving Cert student, I now fully understand the emotions, the stress, the strain and the uncertainty that goes through young people’s minds during this time of year. No matter what way results go, we will survive. It’s important to be proud of your achievements and to not stress over points and the CAO offer rounds. I wish everyone the very best of luck with their results. Thing will always work out in the end and these exams will not define anyone as a person. First round of CAO offers

There was general satisfaction among Clare Leaving Certificate students at this morning’s first round of CAO offers to third level institutions. Over 50,000 third level applicants across Ireland, including up to 1,400 here in Clare, received the much anticipated letter in the post or checked their offers on-line details. Demand for science and technology courses is expected to have grown considerably this year. A record number of Leaving Cert students got 25 bonus points for passing higher level maths and this is being linked to a rise in the points needed for technology-related courses.

Now that Leaving Certificate students have received their results and calculated their points, they can gather their thoughts as to what the future holds for them.
