DELTA are about to commence its Shannon-JFK service, with this Saturday seeing the first flight leave Shannon for JFK. Speaking to The Clare Champion this week, Delta Vice President EMEA Matteo Curci said that the level of interest in the service has been very strong. “In summer 2024 we are growing in Ireland about 35%, which is very significant when you think that the overall market capacity is growing at around 10%. We are investing in Ireland. “Going back to 2006 we always flew Shannon with the 757, a narrow bodied plane. This year for the first time we are introducing the 767, a wide bodied plane, which means the customer will have a greater opportunity to experience our products.” The flights will have four product experience choices, Delta One, Delta Premium Select, Delta Comfort+ and Main Cabin. Customers are now able to pre select meals and by the end of the year Delta plan to have free wifi available …

Monday, May 29 marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of assinnated US President John JF Kennedy. To coincide with this, Clare artist Michael Hanrahan unveils the final four paintings from a series of nine paintings he painted in 2013. They will be on view at 6pm at his gallery on Main Street, Ennistymon. Michael wrote to Caroline Kennedy back in 2013 requesting images of the historic visit of the President to Ireland in 1963. The Kennedy Library sent him archival photos of the visit and he was able to base the paintings from these images. The Kennedy Library selected the painting of ‘JFK in Cork’ and Aer Lingus flew Michael and the painting to Boston where the painting was presented to Tom McNaught Chief Executive of the Kennedy Foundation in the private Kennedy room. LIMERICK City Council is inviting members of the public to have their say on a proposal to rename two of the city’s landmark locations in honour of  Brian Boru and John F Kennedy. The council  wants to gauge public opinion on the renaming of The Shannon Bridge as ‘John Fitzgerald Kennedy Bridge’ and the area at Merchant’s Quay in the vicinity of Limerick City Hall and St Mary’s Cathedral, as ‘Brian Boru Square’. JFK, who had close ancestral ties with Limerick, was honoured as a Freeman of Limerick, which he visited during his 1963 trip to Ireland. 2014 marks the 1000th anniversary of Brian Boru’s death following his victory over the Vikings at the Battle of Clontarf. The High King of Ireland was also born on the banks of the River Shannon at  Killaloe, a short distance from Limerick.
