€1.5m hit to North Clare as Doolin Folk Festival cancelled

THE Doolin Folk Festival, which had been due to take place on September 18-19, has been cancelled for the second year in a row, writes Owen Ryan. Donal Minihane of Hotel Doolin said that it was too risky not to make the call now. “It’s a big investment and it’s too much of a risk to be holding out and holding out. There’s a roadmap coming at the end of August from the Department, but we don’t know what’s in it. There’s too much risk involved. “To be fair to the ticket holders, the artists, the crews and everyone involved, we had to let them know.” He said it would have been very positive for Doolin and its surrounds given the number of tickets sold each year. “It’s a huge amount of bed nights for the area. Enhancement strategy for Doolin

Details of a village enhancement strategy for Doolin will be outlined at a public meeting on Thursday night next. Bucholz McEvoy Architects, on behalf of Clare County Council and the strategy design team, will present the final plan, which seeks to enhance the public realm of Doolin, at a meeting in Hotel Doolin. Among the enhancement strategies indentified is the creation of a Doolin Greenway incorporating shared surfaces, the provision of additional off-street parking and the provision of designated bus stop locations. “The village enhancement strategy forms part of the Doolin Strategic Master Plan and Enhancement Strategy, which also features plans to develop a Visitors Service Centre at Doolin Pier, details of which are expected to be finalised during 2018,” stated Brian McCarthy, acting director of economic development, Clare County Council.
