He may have been the only Galway man amidst a sea of Clare and Limerick on both sides of the divide, writes Eoin Brennan, but Aidan Harte was clearly every bit as proud of his side’s accomplishment as anyone else in the Gaelic Grounds on Saturday afternoon. As joint-manager alongside Terence Fahy and Tomás Kelly, the 2017 All-Ireland senior winning player was most impressed by St Joseph’s Tulla’s ability to thrive on such a prestigious and often times dating stage, a sign of their true character and leadership abilities according to the Gort native. “It’s unbelievable. I suppose the biggest challenge for young people or anyone involved in sport is to do when it counts most on the biggest stage. “And for these guys this is the biggest stage for them in terms of their school and underage careers and they responded by being outstanding from start to finish, there’s no other way of putting it. “They probably don’t realise …

St Joseph’s Tulla 0-17 Ardscoil Rís 0-14 Eoin Brennan SAINT Joseph’s Tulla’s already momentous breakthrough season was deservedly glittered with coveted Harty Cup silverware when edging out Ardscoil Rís in TUS Gaelic Grounds on Saturday afternoon. Knowing that this was their greatest opportunity to cement a first ever Munster Senior A Post-Primary Schools Hurling Championship crown, the East Clare side certainly grasped it with both hands. Matching wind-assisted Ardscoil blow-for-blow in the first half, they duly upped the ante with the conditions to dig out a historic win. Captain Ronan O’Connor led from the front with a relentless hour while Adam Hogan, Oisin Clune, Tony Leyden, Darragh Keogh, Sean Withycombe and Colm Cleary were others to excel when needed most for their school. On the flip side, Broadford’s Niall O’Farrell was Ardscoil Rís’ most effective performer, especially in the first half while Cian Scully brought the fight most to their opponents as the hour elapsed. The foundations for Tulla’s win …

Eoin Brennan speaks to Ardscoil joint-manager Niall Moran ahead of Saturday’s Harty decider Niall Moran has been there from the start of the Ardscoil Rís’ hurling evolution. After breaking new ground throughout the knock-out stages in the late noughties, the Limerick City college finally reached a first Harty Cup Final in 2010 albeit that it took three attempts before finally getting over Thurles CBS in an epic decider series. It would be the first of five Harty Cup triumphs in as many finals, an enviable record highlighted by contesting nine of the last twelve semi-finals. However, while the school do have a superb recent tradition and winning know-how, joint-manager Moran is quick to point out that it’s firmly uncharted waters for the current side. “Given the last two years, it’s brilliant for the whole school to be back in a Harty Final. It’s new territory for all these boys though as it’s their first time in a Harty Final, no …

After their historic victory over De La Salle Waterford, St Joseph’s Tulla joint-manager Terence Fahy was in high spirits. “We just love the way that this team represent our school. They have so many characteristics that people can admire. They are relentless. “Their capacity to respond to setbacks was evident again there today. It came down to the basics really, desire, fitness, and no little skill. We are on a journey, and it begins and ends with our school spirit. “That has been built by a thousand people over many, many years. These lads just drive it on wonderfully. The level of support not alone from their own communities but from all over Clare for these lads is immense.” “The field is just full of past players who have worn that navy jersey over the decades and it’s immense. St Joseph’s Tulla is a special place, full of history, and these lads are carving their niche in that now. We …

Dr Harty Cup semi-final St Josephs Tulla 0-20 De La Salle 1-13 A defiant defensive display by an inspired St Joseph’s Tulla allied to unerring free-taking up front secured the East Clare school their first ever Harty Cup final appearance the weekend after next against Ardscoil Rís, reports Michael O’Connor. De La Salle, who came up short in this tie, had defeated their opponents in the opening round tie by a brace of scores. The performance of Paddy Fitzgerald in that tie had impressed and he was once again to the fore for the Waterford side. However, on this occasion, and in a game dominated by free-taking, the importance of late late scores from play by St Joseph’s proved vital. A mature Tulla side with a number of players available from the 2020 Harty Cup quarter final against St Flannans had targeted at least a place in the knock-out stages and have now gone to the final day out and …

Eoin Brennan previews the TUS Dr Harty Cup Semi-Final between St Joseph’s Tulla and De La Salle Waterford Uncharted territory for St Joseph’s Tulla but a first ever Harty Cup Semi-Final appearance is at least against somewhat familiar foes as De La Salle provided the opposition in the opening round of this year’s competition back in early November. It was a tie that the Waterford side shaded by 0-20 to 0-18 but Tulla will definitely feel that with more of a clinical edge, they should have edged matters. Fourteen wides left the East Clare school frustrated but with the benefit of hindsight, perhaps they wouldn’t have reached the penultimate stage were it not for their determined reaction to that performance and opening reverse. After all, since then St Joseph’s have been ravenous in their trailblazing pursuit of a first ever Munster Senior A PPS Hurling Championship crown. Having carved out a never-say-die attitude along with being boosted by successive victories …

When it comes to Harty Cup, more than talent is needed to get a team over the line, writes Ivan Smyth, and St Joseph’s Tulla have shown they possess that extra ingredient needed to progress deep in the competition. Their resolve in getting to this stage has been admirable having overcome St. Colman’s College Fermoy in extra time to secure their first ever Harty Cup win before backing it up when beating Christian Brothers College (CBC) Cork after trailing by seven points at half time. Terence Fahy, who presides over the team alongside Tomás Kelly (Inagh-Kilnamona) and Aidan Harte (Gort), acknowledges that his side have shown their grit to battle through two tough encounters after losing their first game to this Saturday’s opponents De La Salle College. “We were backed in to a corner against Fermoy but the guys showed great resolve to come back at the death to earn extra time and then get over the line. Then in …
