Fire at old Ennis national school

Four units of the fire service attended a a blaze at an outbuilding at the old Ennis National School  on the Kilrush Road last night (Thursday). The alarm was raised after 11pm when flames and smoke was seen billowing from the campus. The fire units remained at the scene for about two hours and one returned around 5.30am as a precautionary measure. The cause of the fire is unknown at this stage.

Have your say on road safety

A MULTI-AGENCY approach is being adopted to further improve safety on Clare’s roads, through the formulation of a new road safety strategy for the six-year period, 2014-2020. During the life of the previous six-year strategy, there was a 79% reduction in road fatalities in the county. Among the actions undertaken to reduce deaths on the roads was a series of public awareness campaigns, an increase in the garda presence and the introduction of GoSafe speed vans, a significant investment in the motorway network and improvements in the local road infrastructure. The public are being invited to have their say with the latest strategy, which is being being formulated by Clare County Council, supported by An Garda Síochána, the Fire Service and the Road Safety Authority. €60,000 bill for fire service after storm

CHRISTINE whipped up a storm in Clare ,leaving the local fire service with a €60,000 headache as a result of weather related call-outs. Storm related incidents accounted for almost two thirds of all incidents attended by the Clare Fire Service between December 20 and January 3. Seventy of the 115 incidents involved falling trees when the county was battered by ‘Storm Christine’. Meanwhile, non-weather related callouts (45) were down across the county for a fourth successive year.  The call-out figures for the period were less than those recorded during the corresponding periods in 2010, 2011 and 2012 when the fire service was mobilised to 81, 64 and 48 incidents respectively. Six of the call-outs related to house fires with a further six call-outs involving chimney fires while fire-fighters also attended 14 road-based incidents, four agricultural building fires, three storage building fires and five false alarms.
