Coughlan caps first competitive start with a try

Doora-Barefield’s Ethan Coughlan made his first competitive start for Munster as the province started their defence of the United Rugby Championship (URC) with a victory, writes Ivan Smyth.. Coughlan also managed to cross in the left corner for his first Munster try as the home side defeated The Sharks 34-21. The Ennis RFC graduate lined out alongside Irish international Joey Carbery in what was his fourth appearance in the URC for Munster. His try came in the 77th minute as John Ryan produced a fine pass out wide. Alex Kendellen sucked in the defence before finding Antoine Frisch. The centre took the ball into the tackle before offloading to Coughlan as the scrum half dived over in the corner. Shannon RFC’s Kieran Ryan was one of three Munster players to make their competitive debuts. The game was also notable for Andrew Conway’s first Munster start since June 2022. Ennis RFC proud of its Grand Slam heroes

Ivan Smyth speaks to Ennis RFC president Dermot Hallahan in the wake of club graduates Tony Butler, Ethan Coughlan and Conor Moloney becoming Grand Slam champions with Ireland U-20s Barefield’s Tony Butler and Ethan Coughlan alongside Kildysart’s Conor Moloney were part of the first Irish squad to ever win a Grand Slam at this grade. All three men are products of Ennis RFC’s underage system with Butler and Coughlan coming off the bench in last Sunday’s thumping 59-5 win over Scotland. The former kicked three conversions while scrum half Coughlan’s pin point pass culminated in Josh Hanlon crossing the whitewash. Ennis rugby player starts for U20s against France

CLARE’S Ethan Coughlan has made the starting 15 for Friday’s U20 Six Nations Round 2 clash against France in Aix-en-Provence. Head Coach Richie Murphy has named the Ireland Match Day squad, has made four changes in personnel to his starting XV from last weekend’s bonus point win over Wales in Cork, with Aitzol King, Daniel Hawkshaw, Coughlan and Rory McGuire coming into the side for the trip to France. Tony Butler and Conor Moloney are named among the replacements for the match. Commenting ahead of the game, Murphy said: “We were pleased with the performance and result in Round 1, but we’ve had to turn the page quickly ahead of a big challenge on Friday night. “The players acquitted themselves well last week and we have been able to focus on the areas of our game that need refinement this week. Three Clare players in Ireland U20 Six Nations squad

THREE Clare players have made the Ireland squad for the upcoming 2022 U20 Six Nations Championship which begins next Friday. Tony Butler, Ethan Coughlan and Conor Moloney were included by head coach Richie Murphy in his 31-man squad, ahead of Ireland’s opening fixture against Wales at Musgrave Park on Friday, 4 February (Kick-off 8pm, live on RTÉ). The three playing for Garryowen, Shannon and Young Munster respectively all began their careers with Ennis RFC. Head coach Murphy, and his assistant coaches Jimmy Duffy, Willie Faloon and Mark Sexton, are excited about the dynamic of this year’s group having had to make a number of difficult selection decisions following a series of squad camps and Challenge Matches in recent weeks. Ireland kick off the Six Nations against Wales next Friday, before travelling to France in Round 2 on Friday, February 11. Clare’s Coughlan joins Munster Academy

CLARE’S Ethan Coughlan is among three players to join year one of the Greencore Munster Rugby Academy ahead of the 2021/22 season. The other Year One recruits are prop Mark Donnelly (Garryowen FC) and back-row forward Daniel Okeke (Shannon RFC). Scrum-half Coughlan won the U16 Munster title in 2018 and shared the U18 Cup title honours in 2020 with his club side Ennis RFC as his progression from club and regional development squads saw him feature for Munster and Ireland at U18 Clubs level. Below, Ethan in action for Ennis as an Under-13 He captained the Ireland U18 Clubs in Italy in 2019 under Head Coach Fiach O’Loughlin before signing up with All Ireland League side Shannon RFC. For the 2020/21 season he joined several Munster senior training sessions providing cover at 9 and featured for the Munster A side. A member of the National Talent Squad, the 19-year-old was included in the Ireland U20s Talent Camp in May.
